Ok I have 2 questions.
1. Can I buy a sunpass portable from sunpass website and just add rental car info at airport once I get rental info.
2. Can Dh use ME even though ressie techinally started day prior. I'm flying in on Wed. with friend, picking up rental car since I'm one with CC, etc. Dh is flying in Thurs after work so it would b 24+ hrs later. Room is booked with pin code and he is listed on room just that he won't b there first night.

2. Yes, your husband can use DME the day after you arrive. Each guest is entitled to one round trip between your resort & the airport. Just make sure they have his flight info correct (number & date.) My family has done this several times, where we aren't all on the same bus to or from the resort. My dad has had to leave early and not had a problem. My mom decided last sunday she wanted to join me on my would-have-been solo trip that starts tomorrow and we're not going to be on the same flight (or airline) either way. Just make sure they have the info correct & make sure your husband has a copy of all the confirmation info incase there are any questions at the DME desk.

You can add rental car to your Sunpass account at the airport...we have done this from our smart phone twice now. Works fine. You can tell the system when to time out the rental car automatically.

We purchased the transponder online, and they mailed it to us.

We love it.

You actually have up to 72 hours after going through an automated toll with the transponder to register the rental car online. If for some reason the transponder didn't register when passing through the express toll, the information you register with online will prevent the toll from being passed on to the rental agency and ultimately on to you in a huge bill from the car rental agency.

If the car is equipped with PlatePass, just a warning, you may be charged twice depending on if the system catches the SunPass or not. Many cars, like Hertz are equipped for PlatePass and they will bill you direct (without penalty) for toll use plus a fee (about $2.50/day up to $10/week).

The bill is no longer huge. More like a $2 or $3 fee on the days that you use the toll system, plus the tolls.

In case of Avis it"s 2.500/day plus tolls but also says something about if u don't have sunpass u will b billed this. I will watch for it and force them(avis) to refund my fees as I'll have already paid

Just a note, I don't think any of the rental agencies actually handle the program themself, so if there is a problem, most likely you will need to work with PlatePass or similar.

I am very confused.....I was thinking about ordering the sunpass online so I would have it for our trip. We are driving from West Palm, renting from Budget and returning to the Doubletree resort in DTD.

I have to register the rental car after I pick it up? Up here my ezpass is used on any car I use (I know im not supposed to but I do).....

I thought I would just order the pass and stick it on the windshield of my rental....

I used my transponder on rental car and did not register it and didn't have any problem. I only used it to/from airport this trip and had planned on registering, but just forgot. If your rental car is equiped with pass, YOUR transponder/mini transponder overrides it. I asked this question (Avis) because I didn't want to be charged twice and I wasn't. It worked as she said it would.

I ordered my transponder online and they mailed it to me. Didn't take long to get, I then went online and registered it with my car and set up for auto re-load.

If by some chance the transponder doesn't work when going through the toll, if the car is registered you won't be fined. 99.9% of the time there is no problem with the transponder - but .......!!!!!

That is one good thing about the SunPass portable, it beeps when you go through a toll. The mini doesn't. So if you go through a toll with the portable and it doesn't register, you know it. If that happens, then be sure to go online and register the rental car.

We have the newer portable device -- no sounds, no lights. Just faith that it worked.

We've never had an issue, but we're always sure to add the rental car to our account either at the airport or shortly after...that way if it ever failed, it should work anyway once the computer matched up the license plate picture to our SunPass account entry...and if there were a problem we'd be able to unravel the situation with SunPass (and Alamo, because we don't want their service kicking in).
