I am planning on putting DD7's hair into pigtails during our trip. What can I do to keep her 'part' from getting sunburned? Should I just lightly apply sunscreen to the part or what? I don't want her hair to look greasy, but I don't want it painful & peeling either. Thanks!

When my son was wee, I used a spray-sunscreen for him. Maybe that would work? Just keep spritzing through the day! :)

I just put some sunscreen on my finger or my DD did it herself and rubbed it on, no big deal.

5 minutes out in the heat sweating and no one can tell what your hair looked like to begin with anyhow.

but my friend's son (4yrs old) had a tiny mole on the top of his head that turned out to be cancer. He had it removed and thankfully he's fine. I know I never gave it much thought before about going out in the sun without a hat, or even insisting that my dd6 wear one, but I'm starting to think better. At the very least, I would put sunscreen on the part, and not worry about the greasy look! I know it can be hard to get kids to wear hats, but I think I'm going to start bribing mine to do it!

The clear spray on sunscreen works great. I have a little one who is very fair with blonde hair and one day I forgot to put any sunscreen on her part. Boy, she won't ever let me forget it. It was very painful for her. Just don't forget to not get it in their eyes. Yup. You guessed it. I did that too. Ouch..:headache:

I bought sunscreen that is designed for hair and scalps. It was a small pink bottle with a spray top. It added a little shine, but wasn't greasy. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the brand. If I come across it as I clean out the bathroom cabinets;) , I'll let you know.

I make my kids all wear hats. Every day, all day...even with their hair in ponytails and pigtails. I got a horrible, terrible sunburn on my scalp part one summer (here in Ohio). It blistered, and crusted all yellow for days. It was horribly painful (and crusty!). I even had a fever for a couple of days. And I rarely ever used to sunburn.

Hats!!!!!!!

Beth

p.s. I would say sunscreen on the part would be fine, but really, even the scalp covered in hair is getting SOME sun in areas. Also the tops of ears!!!! (I burnt that too, that same summer). Anyway, the head sweats so much that you'd be slathering sunscreen on her scalp every hour or 2, if you are there in heat! The hat should have a brim of some sort, and this will also shade your dd's eyes, and her nose.

Thanks guys! I knew you'd have some great ideas. I think I'll definitely use sunscreen on her head each day. Greasy look is better than pain, right!

I did have her wear a hat today while out shopping, just to see how she'd do with it. She's kept it on the whole time & it looks really cute. I think it helped b/c it's my Tinkerbell one that I wear, so she feels cool wearing it! :rotfl: Gotta love it when your kids are young enough to think that you're cool!

:rotfl2: Also, it helps to be at Disney. My kids don't want to sit under a roof doing nothing, so they put their hats on whether they want to or not!!

Here is a pic of my youngest. her hat didn't even match, but she likes PINK. (BTW, they do go hat-free in the early morning, with sunblock on their heads, and in the evening as well.)

If your dd picks out her own hat, she might be more willing to wear it in the worst of the sunshine.

Have a wonderful trip!
Beth

The first thing we did when we got to the resort was hit the gift shop for hats. DH bought a baseball hat and DD got a bucket hat. (I brought one from home). I think we'll do the same next trip!

I have boys who never seem to get sunburn on their heads...they have such thick hair. But my hair is long, so I always wear it up in summer. I just put sunscreen on my finger and rub it into the exposed parts on my head. One small thing though.....please don't forget about your child's ears!! It's amazing how fast and how extreme, the tops of your ears can burn! Especially if you have long hair that covers them most of the time. Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard and painful way!:headache:

I bought sunblock scalp spray for babies (made by Baby Blanket, I think) for DS (5 months). I didn't end up using it on him since he always had a hat on, but I used it on my own part after I burned it the first day.

I use an Ocean Potion dab-on spot stick for the part in my hair.

It''s not greasy at all, and you can apply it without messing up the 'do. We use either that or our wax stick for ears.

We use this also--found it at Wal-Marts. Unfortunately, last Sept I had it in my bag at the airport (during the time when no liquids/gels were allowed in carry ons) and it got confiscated. So at WDW we had to use regular sunscreen on our hair parts. The dab on stick works much better!

I just use my regular spray on sunscreen, spray it on your fingers and rub it in the part and tops of ears! I don't think it makes my hair look greasy. But even that is better then a burnt peeling scalp! :scared1:

my 2 year old is a baldy and fair complected to boot. my 4 year old has a part in his blond hair. We are flying and I would like to take that stick of sunscreen with us for the first day of pool time since our luggage will not come until later by magical Express.

Does anyone know if I can fit that into our ziplock for carry on? I'd hate to have it confiscated after paying for it. No car once we arrive and hate to pay resort prices as well. . .

I do have a travel size regular sunscreen I was going to take for first day only to get us through until our bags arrive, hoping it will be enough for 6 of us!

We made it about 15 minutes in the park and headed to a gift shop for 4 hats. $12,000 later we were good! Ok, not really but close to $100.

The OP spot stick is less than 2 oz.; it will easily fit in your 3-1-1 baggie.

& be sure to get ears and tops of feet too. :thumbsup2

She's going to look cute in her Tink hat!

Banana Boat used to make a hair and scalp sunscreen It was in a clear bottle I don't know if they still do but it worked great it was a clear spray.
