Sun warning - no apologies

Just a warning about the sun here in Florida. We were in typhoon Lagoon the other afternoon when we overheard some Brits discussing their sunscreen use. Factor 6 and 8 was mentioned before someone asked a female member of the group what she was using. "I decided to go au naturel today she said". "Au naturel?" "No, I decided to wear no screen today". At least the reply was very direct, questioning her sanity - and all day in TL! Even factors as low as 6 & 8 are questionable in the sun strength of Florida but no screen at all is really asking for serious trouble. Please be sensible about sun safety. You will still tan with high factors.

Disney Water Parks have a sign with the days UV index and minimum recommend SPF for sunscreen.

Last week it was a UV index of 8 with SPF 15.

I had 30 on as I had a good colour and don't really burn.

I always use factor 50, after getting serious burns a few years ago at Vero Beach when I was only in the sea for around 2hrs.

Got burned at Castaway Cay last year using factor 20, I am not fair skinned. Using factor 30+ for our upcoming trip in three weeks. The children get factor 70.

I have bought factor 50 because I have fair skin and when we're at the water parks DBF will use 50, but the rest of the time probably 30. I was wondering about discovery cove though, I read they give you factor 30, anyone got any experience of this??

good warning!!!!!

every year i see very typically fair skinned brits at disney world walking around redder than apples....so painfully burned it's frightening to look at!!!

please please please please wear sunscreen and plenty of it!!!

That's insane! I'm naturally cautious being a pale skinned redhead but I always go for factor 50 sunblock whilst I'm in Florida! I'm not risking a day with the mouse by not putting on enough sunscreen!

It was a few years back when we went to DC but I remember they gave us sunscreen from these big pots was quite thick but safe for the marine life. Plus you can also opt for a wetsuit.

The very last thing I'd want to do on my holiday of a lifetime is make myself or any of my family sick, in pain or miserable.

We mostly used the spray on sun screens they sell there - a bit pricey but SO easy and they work so well! I actually came back from WDW in May and people I knew in the UK had tanned more than me in those two weeks

I don't think I have EVER come back with a tan. I always get asked 'wasn't it sunny?':rotfl:

Well both DW and I take the sun well and have no problem tanning but we use no less than factor 20. I was horrified hearing this group talking about 6s and 8s but couldn't believe my ears when the the female, who was old enough to know better, said she was wearing no screen at all. I certainly make no apology for this thread having seen personally within our family the absolute tragedy that can be caused because of the sun's effect on the skin.

I also always come back white as a sheet due to my faithful factor 50!

When I am in Florida for a long time I have a great tan. I use SPF 30 initially, followed by SPF 15, with a moisturizer factor 15 on my face. I am allergic to sunscreen on my face, but I also wear a hat. If I were to spend a whole day at the water parks, I would burn even with the 30 SPF.

Not only is no sunscreen, or a factor of 6 or 8 foolish, you risk ruining your whole vacation due to sun poisoning. Many folks underestimate the power of Florida sun, or do not reapply the sunscreen often enough to be effective.

We always use a factor 8, usually Australian Gold, and we find it very effective. But thanks for your concern!

I don't use sunscreen at all, if i do I burn no matter what the spf, have been like this my whole life... in Florida.

On the whole I think most are more cautious when abroad - by all accounts people are more likely to get burnt at home here in the UK where you perhaps underestimate the sun.

I have NEVER got burnt in Florida - but back here at home I have often got caught out. With the recent hot weather in Sussex I was horrified to hear of a 4 week old newborn being treated in the East Grinstead burns unit after not being covered or protected

As an adult it is your choice and more fool you if you get burnt but I do agree with Tony Toon and for heavens sake folk should protect their kids!

You want to try living here Beth! After our rare, hot summer this year, the theme color is RED!

What's really funny about it though is that you DO tan with a good suncream. I always use a factor 30 and apply it several times a day when we are outside, no matter where I am. It may be because my skin tans very easily and I'm not very prone to burning, but we go through bottles of the stuff in Florida and still get a great tan. I think people have this misconception that you can't tan if you have sun protection on :upsidedow

I think it depends on your skin. I use factor 50
And never tan but I would burn easily without it. My DD is the same. My DH uses factor 30 and tans. My DS issues factor 50 and comes home a beautiful dark brown. I use a very good quality brand.
