What works best for sun burn pain? I wore sunscreen but it was 89 when we were outside. Im burned on the back, and shoulders and it hurts!

Someone just told me that vinegar takes the pain away. She didn't say what type, but just plain vinegar.

Or Banana Boat after-sun aloe. It's a green gel and that stuff goes a long way.

I have a really bad sunburn, and my shoulders are all swollen, red, and they hurt like crazy. I find that solarcaine helps a little bit, but I haven't found anything that really relieves the pain yet.

Good luck.

Time, that is what works, and really is the only thing. Don't you hate sunburns, they really hurt. For me, taking some tylenol also helped because I just felt so bad when I was burned. I don't think there is anything out there that really relieves sunburn pain, at least I haven't found it yet, and I am a native Floridian and have had numerous sunburns.

White vinegar.......smells BUT really works! Soak a towel or washcloth and just sit there with it on your burn. Keep freshening the towel to keep it very wet. The vinegar somehow just sucks the heat right out of the burn....and takes the pain. Later, put aloe on. You will probably still peel, but this will help with the heat and pain!

Advil will work decently. It's an anti-inflammatory so it helps with the inflammation of a sunburn. Cool compresses, bathe in a lukewarm tub, sleep on your stomach.:flower3:

Treat it like you would any burn--Take something by mouth for the pain, and make sure to lotion, lotion, lotion! Do they still make Noxema? I used to use that stuff on my sunburns in my youth, and it really made it feel cooler.

I noticed you listed the temperature. You can get sunburned in any temperature. Like in the winter while skiing for instance. Hot doesn't have anything to do with it. You can also get one on those slightly overcast days. THOSE are the days you need to be most careful since you probably wouldn't think to apply sunscreen.

I googled "sunburn relief" for you and found lots of home remedies you might have on hand.

On top of that, don't forget to reapply sunscreen if you've been in water (even if it says waterproof), sweating, or even just every hour on spots that are getting sun.

Soak a washcloth in water and white or apple cider vinegar. Put it on and it takes the pain away. You will have to rewet it every so often.

Hey, thanks for the home remedy information. I've sworn by the strong tea for YEARS and people always look at me crazy but it really works and is a whole lot less expensive than purchasing Solarcaine or Aloe Vera gel. Also, no bad odors like with vinegar and is not sticky or gooey like some other products. Definitely use old towels (or t-shirts or bandanas or other cloths) as the tea definitely will stain.

lotion helps, too bad I still cant sleep, darn army blankets

Army blankets? Seriously? The old fashioned wool itchy scratchy army blankets? In the summer? On a sunburn?

Umm, well, yeah, no wonder you can't sleep.

Perhaps try a nice smooth cotton sheet instead.

Ibuprofen and steeped tea bags. Especially green tea. Works wonders!

My neighbor swears by Vicks Vapor rub. I've never tried it as I don't get out into the sun to much but her dd came home from a day at the water park and she had a bad sun burn. I watch her mom put on the vicks and about an hour later the pain had stop and she didn't fell hot to the touch!

But like I said I've never tried it.

im under the sheet, not that it all to well helps. Yea In the summer I sleep in my living area on my ratty couch with my army blanket, cause its the lightest blanket I own.

As someone who is deathly pale and proud of it here are a few sunburn tips I have learned over the years...

1. Temperature has nothing to do with getting burned or not. I can go to Florida and it can be 90 and I won't burn. Out here in NM it can be 75 and I will burn. Always use sunblock...at least SPF 45. I go SPF 70.

2. If you do get burned wear light colored and loose fitting clothes.

3. Use aloe gel, if you can get the kind with lidocaine that works even better.

4. Take Advil.

5. Take either a vinegar or tea bath in tepid water. And by tepid I mean lukewarm. Pour a couple cups of white vinegar OR add some black tea bags. I prefer the tea bags since the tannin in the tea helps the burn to heal and it becomes a tan afterwards.

6. Once it starts to peel don't put anything with alcohol on it like body spray. And if it itches do NOT scratch it, you can damage the new skin underneath. If it starts to itch take an oatmeal bath, Aveeno makes packages of oatmeal bath that you just add to your bath water. It speeds the healing.

And get rid of the army blanket, those things are horrible and no matter what time of the year they irritate and scratch your skin.
