Summertime and Disneyland .Oo-De-Lally!!

Loved your latest update. I had to laugh at the Bizaro DW comment because that is what we think when we go there. Bizaro DL LOL. Like I said before it is all what you are used to. I bet if you polled a 100 people the ones who always go to DW would say they prefer it and vice versa with DL. I love them both and my dream is to someday go to Disney Paris and of course I would LOVE to go to the ones in Asia but I doubt I will ever make it there. To me anything Disney is awesome. And one thing after being to DL so many times over the years we have gotten to the point that we can go and just sit and enjoy people watching and such although that was when we had AP's and could go 2 or 3 times a year. Sadly now it is getting to where we will be lucky to go once a year.

In fact other than our little short 2 day trip this past march where we didn't even go to CA we have NO more trips planned till the fall of 15. So it is going to be SO weird not going for over a year.

I agree too about the fp. I thought it was perfect when you could use them after they expired too. My mom uses a scooter and our plan was always to collect them in the morning and go on stuff as we went and then use them in the afternoon. If we didn't get back to some it was ok but at least we HAD them. When we went this past march even WITH fp because they enforce the time we had 2 different sets of space mountain passes that we were never able to use because the window ended up being right during a dinning ressie or in the middle of something else. People say don't pull them if the return time doesn't work but that's not convenient either. If you get there and the return time is during a dinning ressie are you just supposed to "hang out" till it gets to a better time? I don't know personally I thought it worked well the way it was. I don't think that people took advantage and I think the lines are just as long with the enforced return times as before.

I know my mom is REALLY not looking forward to fp+ because she owns her own business and works 12 hour days 7 days a week and she said the last thing she wants to do on a trip is have to book everything down to the slightest detail. I tend to agree. I hate having to book dinning and now with the deposits what if someone is too tired or sick or something else to use it??? Plus then you are stuck and what if you aren't hungry? If you do the dinning plan that is a TON of food to have to eat if you aren't that hungry.

I think all these things are great on paper but not always practical.

But we all love Disney and I think we will all still go no matter what LOL. I just hope that by the time we finally make it back all the kinks are worked out LOL

Even though Matterhorn was closed for me, Indy was not. And this became a super fav. You can go ahead and say it... the ride vehicle is the same. But the experience is so much different. Loved it.

Haha, funny that I choose my hats solely based on screaming Disney. It's mandatory.

Isn't DLR Pirates something??? Since WDW built there's last, I would have expected it to be better. Oh well, still awesome.

And you are so so so right. DL is totally the bizzaro MK. Wait, why is Haunted Mansion there almost next door to Pirates? But I loved the little differences so much.

PotC is the main reason why my family decided to go to DLR next year instead of cruising again. Seriously. It's probably my favorite ride @ WDW & my DS loves it also. When I started telling him that everyone says the DLR version is so much better, he just looked at me and said, "We HAVE to go ride it, Mom." And the rest is history. Glad to hear it didn't disappoint y'all.

That is so awesome lol! Yes it was definitely as great as everyone makes it our to be. It kicks the WDW version in the booty. I think you guys are not going to be disappointed
And I'm the same way with my Disney Visa....gotta spend enough to get that discount! It would be foolish not to!

ITA--love, love, loved legacy FP at DL when we went! So awesome to ride our favorites over and over. Don't know why they had to mess with it at WDW!!

We also rode POTC over and over--I think it was our family's FAV of the trip!!

I would like to be the one to take credit for bizarro WDW but it's a phrase that I have heard many use here on the disboards when describing how they are....it does seem to perfectly describe it though! Ugh FP+ I don't know how I am going to survive not having my legacy FP anymore. Yes POTC was awesome

yes it's so funny how people are about their "home park" we just feel more in out element with WDW as I am sure you do with DLR. Either way as long as it's Disney that is all that is important lol. I would love to do the foreign country Disney parks!

Yeah I hear ya. Unfortunately for us they had already been inforcing the return times for our first trip so we never experienced that but the new system is just stupid. We have always enjoyed the flexibility of just going to a land, grabbing a FP for a headliner, and doing smaller rides in that land while waiting. I thought that was the whole point.Ugh. Oh well

Could not agree more and yes the over planning does not make it better because you never know what kinks life is going to give you when you are there and your schedule may not stay the same as it needed to be 60 days prior.

It is amazing. I want to say that the reason why they may be so different had something to do with when they were building POTC in MK they could only go so far down in the ground before having to stop because it was basically a swamp and so they could not add the second drop and had to shorten the ride too. I think I remember reading that somewhere

Our First Day in Disneyland Pt3
​

So after our adventure with pirates we happily skipped our way back to Tommorowland.

It was time to use another FP! Obviously the ride here and the one at HS are identical so this (thankfully) would be the only time we rode this ride here. My family is obsessed with this ride at HS and if you let them they will ride it 20 times in a row to try to get every sequence in. Being that we were in a park that had more than 5 fun things to do saved me from having to ride over and over….well that and the fact that the standby wait time here was insane compared to what we are used to in WDW. Maybe the summer had something to do with it too but it was definitely not a walk on lol.

What's up R2? One cool thing that happened on this particular voyage was that Cory was the rebel spy. In all of the times we have rode at WDW only Sydney has been the rebel spy…..once. It was an awesome bonus for DS to finally get picked!

We headed over to Frontierland next to use our BTMRR FP's.

By this time we were getting into the afternoon hours of the day and it was getting rather warm and very very crowded. So much so around the entrance of this ride that this was the best picture I could snap without getting plowed over lol.

This was another ride that we were very excited to compare. It had also just recently opened from a whole year of being closed for refurb? How in the world locals could go that long without riding the wildest ride in the wilderness is beyond me. My family would need counseling for something like that. They had indeed made some major changes, I had heard, and also added in some new special effects.

This also happens to be my DS's favorite ride in WDW. We were pumped and ready to go!!!

We patiently waited for our runaway train to arrive. EEKKKK!!!

And then we were off! DS and I tried the goat trick and honestly I'm not sure if it made us any dizzier but it was fun trying!

I would say this ride is at about the same par as the one in WDW. Both were awesome! I did think the dips at the one at MK might be a little more dippy maybe? It definitely seemed a lot smoother here in DL than the one at MK IMO. But…..the new special effects that they added to the last part are AWESOME! And unique to this ride. Exploding dynamite is always a plus!!

We do love our Thunder!

Speaking of Thunder that takes us to our next adventure….a petting zoo!
While it seemed different to us to have a petting zoo in Disneyland we were not here for the goats.

Although we did stop to pet….the goats. No we were here for one reason only.
Unfortunately for us on this particular day they were laying down new hay and stuff for the animals so almost no animals could be found.

But we were passed by an incredibly large horse! We would have to try another day for what we were looking for. We washed our hands and made our way out of the ranch to a new land. Fantasyland!

Now at this time of day it was quite obvious that we would not be doing much here. The combination of summer crowds and no fastpass for any fantasyland rides means longs waits for everything. At this point we were just killing some time before our lunch reservation so we figured we would just see if anything had a decent standby wait time. I want to also say that I am in love with the theme and detail in DL fantasyland. It just really looks like a storybook and way better than WDW….well the old part of Fantasyland anyways.

I noticed the Frozen overlay by Village Haus for the Anna and Elsa meet and greet. Very cute!

Hey Olaf! He seemed to be enjoying his summer here in CA. The line to meet the sisters was, of course, insane. We moved along.

The lines for most everything here at this time of the day were too long to stand in but we did see Pinoc with not much of a line. I was very much looking forward to experience the dark rides that DL had that WDW either did not or no longer had.

Pinocchio was one that I was looking forward too. Love this movie!

The ride started with the old "I've got no strings to hold me down" bit

Then things got a little trippy and weird. I felt like I was in the pink elephant sequence in Dumbo

But no worries because everyone lived happily ever after. The ride was different. Overall we enjoyed it.

YAY for new dark rides at Disneyland!!!

Our First Day in Disneyland Pt4


After the interesting take on Pinocchio we noticed another dark ride with a small wait. This was also one that is sadly no longer in existence in WDW. We had the good timing to be in MK on the last day that Snow White's Scary Adventures was running and got to experience it on its last day of operation. So we were also happy to be able to ride it here too.

We paused for a moment outside to catch a glimpse of the evil queen herself.

DS got to see firsthand what happens when you try to take the golden apple

I loved the queue in this ride and thought the props were very fitting

I also got a kick out of these happy little furry fellas

Within no time we were able to board. I definitely thought the details here were better than what they had in MK

GAH! Evil Queen transformation!!!

Sorry for the fuzzy pictures. It’s the best I could do. Overall I thought it was a lot like the one we had at MK but it was nice to be able to experience the scary dark ride one more time.

After this it was getting close to our lunch time so we headed back towards Main Street. Through the back of the castle

And out the front. Any excuse to walk through the castle should be taken. Always! I really did like Sleeping Beauty's Castle. It kind of reminded me of Candyland. Is that weird?

We then came across Mary Poppins and Burt having a sing and dance with some kids. I really felt like the characters here really lived here and I always noticed them just kind of wandering around and engaging with people, unlike WDW where it seems more like they are an attraction with a line. It felt more real and genuine.

We ran into Peter quite a lot on this trip and he was always just kind of running around DL and playing tricks and stuff. It was so awesome!

We also noticed a lot of transportation and horses on Main Street. As it should be. The authenticity of it made it worth the smell of horse poop that we kept running into on the hub lol.

This guy was awesome! He was so happy and just drove along down Main Street honking his little bicycle horn. We had finally made it to our lunch destination. But where would we be having our first lunch at Disneyland?

A Birthday Surprise

We had reached our destination for lunch. We had agreed on a budget friendly vacation and so unfortunately this had meant not being able to eat at A LOT of TS restaurants that I had wanted to experience. However an exception had to be made for this one meal. After all it was DH's birthday and I told him we had to eat somewhere nice for his birthday! We checked in at Carnation Café at 1:20pm which was 10 minutes before our scheduled ADR time.

Once we checked in we were told that an indoor table would still be quite a long time, even with an ADR. Hmmmmm. In their defense the indoor seating area is very very small so I could obviously see where this could be a problem if everyone who had an ADR wanted to sit inside. But it was quite warm outside and a nice cool lunch seemed ideal for us so we opted to wait for an inside table. They gave us our buzzer and told us that it would work anywhere on Main Street so we could wander around if we wanted. This seemed ideal so we went on a window shopping adventure while we waited.

One store that we visited had the neatest décor! We seriously spent a good deal of time here just looking around.

Eventually we got very bored and were getting tired and hungry so we decided to go back and sit while we waited.

Finally people started to clear out and we were promptly seated at an inside table. Yay!!!

We started our meal with some famous fried pickles. While the amount for the price seemed a little on the small side I have to say that they were sooooo good! We were starving so the pickles were gone in under one minute lol. While we waited for our food the boys decided to play some game located on the back of the kids menu that you needed a coin for. At one point one of them managed to flick it and instead of it landing on the table it landed in one of their water glasses…..

Nice. Always good when you have to flag your server down to tell her you need a new drink because you managed to flick a penny in yours lol.
The food finally came and we were so glad to be eating lol!

DD went with the kids mac and cheese with fries and fruit.

DH and I went with the same which was a cheeseburger and fries meal.

DS went with the kids hamburger meal with a side of fruit.

We also asked for a side of mustard and they brought out what seemed like a pitcher of mustard lol! As we got closer to the end of our meal I started to get a bit nervous. I had planned a surprise for DH's birthday a few weeks before our trip and ordered a cake, which is why an exception had to be made for this meal and we had to eat at a TS restaurant. DH had no clue. Oh I am a sneaky one. I spotted our sever coming out of the kitchen with the cake and DH was so not aware. He managed to completely miss the line of CM's and the manager sneak behind him with the cake, and only when I stood up with the video camera and point it on him did he noticed the crowd of employees behind him with his cake ready to sing him a happy birthday song. LOL it was priceless.

At this point there was so much going on that I completely forgot to take a close up pic of the cake before they whisked it away to cut it for us. Our wonderful server did take a family pic however with the cake in the picture.

I was so glad that I had decided to do this. Disney really did make this so special and even though DH always makes it a point to say not to make a big fuss I think he really did enjoy his birthday moment. We all had a slice of yummy cake and they boxed up the rest for us to take with us. We also gave DH his birthday card with a gift card to use when we returned home. I had to get a bit creative since it would have been hard to sneak an actually gift on the trip with us without him knowing. I had scheduled our lunch to be a bit late on purpose today because I knew that we would have to take the cake with us and wanted to time it with an afternoon break from the park. We paid our bill which came to a total of around $100 including the cake (which was $33) and tip. I paid with our Disney Rewards card and for some reason did not save the receipt….doh! They boxed up the remainder of the cake for us and then we headed out.

I took a shot of the birthday boy himself by his secret Disney princess crush…. Ariel. He will never admit this to anyone however if you ask him and by the way we never had this conversation either lol.

Once outside the park we took a pic of the kids that we had missed this morning by the iconic Mickey head.

Then we made our way back to the CCI to take a much needed afternoon nap. It was now 3:00. I was so thankful for the late summer hours the parks were hosting because I felt like I could sleep for hours at this point but did not want to feel like I was sleeping away precious park hours. So happy for 10pm and 12am closing times!

Loved your update and like you we always make sure to hit the stuff that is in DW and not at our park but I think that is one of the reasons I get homesick for DL is BECAUSE of the stuff that is missing. My family loves Indy and I love all the fantasyland rides. I love the storybook boats and although they are pretty childish I still love them and esp at night when they are all lit up. I was on them once years ago and it was a full moon and they stopped the boats because of the fireworks. So we got to sit in the boat and watch the fireworks over the matterhorn. I know they don't do that anymore but this was back in the 80's and it was about the coolest thing I have ever seen.

How did you like carnation cafe? We love it and I always go for the potato soup of course and how fun you did the birthday cake. My daughter's birthday is new year's eve and we took her to Blue Bayou and got that exact same cake. So fun!!

That's the thing about Disneyland. Most patrons are locals, so a ride going down isn't as big of a deal as it is to us folks who only have a few days to experience everything. Must be nice.

Oh my lord, Snow White. I was so lost on that ride. When it ended I was simply shocked. Huh??? Colour me confused. I guess the premise is you are Snow White, but the ending to me just felt abrupt. Like, where's the happy ending?

Yes, once upon a time, WDW had roaming characters exactly like you described. I miss that so much.

When we first went to WDW, being DLR vets, we felt a little off in Magic Kingdom. We love the new effects for BTMRR at night. When we went in the day, we couldn't really notice them, but at night, you could see all the effects much better.

We will be back to DLR in 5 days. Had to plan another trip because Indy was closed in April.

Life Update

Hi everyone just wanted to say that I am sorry for the lack in updates lately and I hope to get going again soon with this TR. Life threw a wrench my way last week in the form of my job and basically after almost 17 years with the same company and working the same "kid/school" friendly schedule for the last 15 years they have decided that my hours will no longer work for the company and I had the choice to go along with the new plan or if not then was told sorry and maybe this was not the right company for me anymore Yay for big corporate companies right?! I get that it's a business and they have to make decisions that are right for their sake but it does make me sad after investing so many years with them to get the "blanket blah blah blah" statement. I have been with this company since I was old enough to legally have a job at 16 and in the last decade they really did strive to keep me on with their company by molding me into a unique position to keep me from leaving and allowing me to work around being a mommy and a wife. It never really made sense on paper but my job was justified by the work that I did. Now apparently all that matters is what looks good on paper and I just don't. What do you do right? Obviously the new hours that they are wanting from me will in no way work with my kids schedule especially when they start school in the fall, and my lack of being available will inevitably cause me to lose our medical and dental insurance before the year is out because I will lose my full time status. It's a domino effect for sure. But there is a silver lining in all of this and I have a new job lined up to start in Sept when we get back from WDW! It does not have insurance so we will have to get back on the hubs which is expensive but you gotta do what you gotta do right? It will also be an hour commute there and an hour commute back but.....it's a great opportunity and it's a "grown up job" in an office and the new starting pay will justify the drive and the extra cost of insurance so I am super excited! It really is a blessing . But in saying all of this in the meantime I have to stay at my current job until Sept because (A) I don't want to start a new job before our vacation and (B) my 17 year anniversary with my present company is in August and a bonus check is to be deposited in to our account the day before our WDW trip starts, which I am counting on to help fund our trip and I don't want to do anything to make the company think that they do not have to pay my bonus to me. So in the meantime I am having to work some not so great (and late) hours right now which is poop and also manage to keep mum about leaving and my great new job that awaits so that I don't jeopardize my bonus check, all the while busting at the seams everyday and wanting so bad to tell them I quit.....aaahhhh it's madness!!! But it's all gonna work out and I promise to make time for this TR when I can....hopefully soon. Anyways now that I have spilled my guts you guys all have a magical evening!!!! ~ Jenn ​

Number One. Had to pay my respects to Walt. I could not get over the fact that I was actually standing in front of the iconic firehouse that was also Walt's apartment. I was just in awe. To think that he used to look out that vt ery window….it was just wow.

I know what you mean! While I happen to enjoy the experience of Disneyworld more than Disneyland, it is hard to ignore how special DL is. It certainly has a different feeling to it.

I'm so sorry to hear this and that is so wrong to not value a good and loyal employee. I have had kind of the same experience in that I worked for years but when I had my kids I quit all together for a few years then I worked from home and then finally when the girls were in preschool I went back to work for my mom part time just to get out of the house and for some pocket money. (my ex was the bread winner back then). Well fast forward 13 years and we split up and I find myself now having to LIVE off my lousy part time income that was never supposed to support me but merely give me some extra cash. I am SO grateful that my parents have helped my girls and I out but I have been separated for three years and have looked for EVERY type of job both in my field (office work) and things like target etc. I couldn't get anyone to even talk to me. I think that companies would rather hire young kids that don't expect much then people who have been working for years that I guess in theory they think will expect too much.

I am glad to hear though that you have a new job waiting that will work well for you and again I am so sorry about what happened. I know it must be bittersweet. No worries on the report. We will be here when you have the time and GOOD LUCK!!

Oh Jenn. I am so so so sorry to read this. I work for a big company now too, so I totally understand the "looks good on paper" mentality. Well actually, I really don't understand it, but I can empathize. I just hate the "bottom line" mentality of the big corporations. How you can value or not value someone based on "what looks good on paper" is just so freaking stupid. Loyalty and respect just don't seem to exist in the "new economy" and I guess I will never understand that. I actually created a video a few years back dedicated to what was my old company before we were absorbed by a monster. And the main thing I focused on? The main thing that made us great? The people. Now I'm one of the few remaining as pretty much everyone else is gone.

I sincerely hope that this new job works out (I'm sure it will) and that you get that big bonus cheque you so deserve.
