Planning summer trip and I trying to find a clean, inexpensive hotel that is in an ok area. Any recommendations?

You need to forget about inexpensive. It's not possible in NYC in the summer. Do a search of this forum; this topic has been discussed many times and you'll find a lot of suggestions. Also check tripadvisor.com. Consider staying outside Manhattan, such as in Jersey City, NJ. There are a number of hotels near the PATH train that make getting into Manhattan quick and easy.

We live in upstate ny so we drove down and stayed in jersey city around x-mas time when the hotels rates are also very expensive. The location was great for taking the path train in to NYC and the park on the river had amazing skyline views of the city. The only time we can afford to stay in the city is late winter or very early spring.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square North and loved it! Actual queen size beds (not doubles), free breakfast and a terrific location. It was pretty inexpensive in March, not sure about their summer rates.

Also check Hampton Inn at Madison Square Garden. Great location to be central and use subways. Loved the breakfast room, atrium.

We stayed in Secaucus, NJ and took the bus to Port Authority. The rooms were 1/3 of the cost, so even with transportation cost in and out of city, it was much cheaper. It was a safe area and very easy to use the bus. It was a short ride and we stayed at the La Quinta and got dropped off right in front of the hotel. Free parking was an added bonus. :goodvibes

I understand that it will be impossible to find anything under $100. It seems that on the low end, it will be around $200. How successful have people been with Priceline/Hotwire?

We stayed at The Hotel @ Times Square in July of 2010. We were very pleased. When I first started looking, it was priced at $155 per night. Unfortunately I waited, when I booked it was May and the prices had gone up to $195 per night. So I think the earlier you book, the cheaper the price will be. We've considered going back and would definitely stay at this hotel again, I did notice that the prices in the fall seemed to be high no matter when you book.

The hotel was on 46th street and only a block and a half away from Times Square. It was clean and the room not at small as others warned me they would be. It also included breakfast which was awesome!

Hope that's helpful.

Keep in mind, using hotel booking sites, that a 2 star hotel in NYC is not cozy, but scary. Parking fees can be $50 a day. I don't think you can find a decent NJ hotel in the area for under $100!
