ok... i have to choose three out of these five books:
go ask alice
it happened to nancy
annie's baby
a child called it
i know why the caged bird sings

does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks.

I've read Annie's Baby and thought it was Very good. I Have A Child Called It and have Heard it's really good...just haven't been able to get to it yet.

um, Maya Angelou

Other than that --- not real happy summer reading there. :(

A Child Called It is very good, but very disturbing. I believe the Annie/Nancy books are both teenage pregnancy orientated but I've never read them. Go Ask Alice is a classic that every teenager is forced to read.

Wow, I read Go Ask Alice over 20 years ago, more than once. I think I even still have it. It's a very good book, but not a light happy read that's for sure. I cannot comment on the others.

I've read "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" so many times I practically know it by heart. :) Good choice there.

I'd also recommend anything by Amy Tan (author of The Joy Luck Club). I'm reading "The Bonesetter's Daughter" right now and it's great.

Also am reading "DreamCatcher" by Stephen King right now. T hat one just creeps me out big time. :scared:

Oh wait, I have read It Happened to Nancy. Another very good, but not real uplifting book. I know I cried for awhile after I read it.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

A Child Called It

It Happened to Nancy

Those would be my three picks. They may not always be uplifting, but they are most definitely eye opening. I would recommend reading somethign REALLY FUN in between.

Good luck with your summer reading! Enjoy!

I read Go Ask Alice almost 30 years ago and it was a good book. If memory serves me correctly, it was even a made for tv movie. That is the only book I am familiar with, so I can't comment on the others.

Definitely read A Child Called It. It's sad and disturbing, but it's really well written. And it's one of those books that you just have to read, if that makes sense, even though it's truly awful to think that anyone ever had to go through that.
Don't read Go Ask Alice. I never made it through the book; it was difficult to read and gave me more information about drugs even than a druggie would need to know.
Sounds like they want you to have a depressing summer with those book choices. I haven't read the others but I've heard they're all downers.
