Looking for well written(that's important to me) and somewhat light reading. Comedy or suspense, biography non-fiction...it doesn't matter. I've got the summer off and I catch up then. I already have "Bad Mother" in my basket to take to the beach.

I'll entertain all ideas...carry on!!!
Thanks!
mimi

I would hop over to the "What Are You Reading Now?' thread filled with hundreds of boks & reviews

A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. Quite controversal among historians and conservatives. "A collection of letters, speeches, and last words of agitators, activists, soldiers and slaves." It is being made into a film for the History channel.

oooo, that sounds very cool!!! Headed to the library site to reserve! I'm 3rd on the list.

I liked both The Secret and 90 minutes in heaven, the first about the power of positive thinking and the second about a preacher who was in a horrible car wreck and was actually pronounced dead for 90 minutes and came back to life. So amazing-without being overly spiritual for those who may not want that angle.

Have fun reading! And if any turn out great let us know!

I can't find it. I've tried the 'search' and I've looked at several pages. Anyone have a link? thanks!

I just finished The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks and thought it was pretty good. Love story & suspense combo.

Walt Disney triumph of the american imagination by neal gabler is a good read:goodvibes

Anything by:

Stuart Woods
Matthew Pearl
Janet Evanovich
James Patterson( I don't like his sappy novels but I do like his murder mystery novels)
Greg Isles
Michael Connelly
Lee Child
David Baldacci
Clive Cussler
Jodi Picoult

Some of my Favorites

"The Kitchen Boy" -Fictionalized account of the last days of the last czar of Russia

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" -told in first person by a boy who has Aspergers and is trying to find out who murdered the neighbors dog. Funny and sad at the same time -and gives you insight on Autism.

"Through the Narrow Gate" -the story of a young nun in the 1960s.

I really enjoy Agatha Christie. I've read a ton of her work. Haven't been disappointed by any. One of my all time favorites is; The Mirror Cracked.

I also love Wendi Corsi Staub. If you're looking for suspense, she's got it!

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
and
The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul

both by Douglas Adams

also the Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy books. I find these to be good summer reads.

Guernsey Litererary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The Spellman books by Lisa Lutz

I'm currently reading Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Bradley

Definitely, any book by Stuart Woods

First Family by Baldacci was really good

Recently read "The Secret History of the Pink Carnation" by Lauren Willig. A fictional spy along the same lines as the Scarlet Pimpernel. It wasn't too bad.

If you don't mind a bit of Fantasy pretty much anything by Guy Gavriel Kay is excellent.

And for regency romance you can't beat Georgette Heyer, the author who started the genre in the 1930's. She is renowned for her historical accuracy, in fact her novel "An Infamous Army" about the Battle of Waterloo has been used in university history classes. It is still a romance novel though.

If you are looking for froth, have you tried the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella?

:rotfl: I was going to recommend these books, as well. I'm also currently reading The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and I'm loving it. It's about an 11 year old girl who is investigating a murder at an English country house. It's fabulous so far. :thumbsup2

And, if you have not read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, go get it immediately. It's about the Nazi occupation of the Guernsey Islands during WWII and it is a wonderful book--hilarious and sad all at the same time.

hoosl--you have to keep me posted on what you're reading. I think we have the same taste in books. ;)

A lot of Amy Tan books
Like Water for Chocolate
Rain of Gold and Thirteen Senses by Victor Villasenor
Knights by Linda Lael Miller
The Shopaholic series
Doomed Queens
Marie Therese: Child of Terror
What the Queen wore to the Revolution

Any lurid romance novel you can find in the supermarket.

I ordered these. Thanks! I love to read.

I just read "The Help". Wonderful novel but still in hard back only.

"The Secret Lives of Bees" is one of my all time favorites. Easy read and beautiful story. A lot of people have already read that one.

A few of my other all time favorites are "The Power of One" , "A Prayer for Owen Meany" , "The Book Thief" (this is a teen novel but very well done) and for nonfiction "Three Cups of Tea".

If you are wanting just a light fun read I have really enjoyed "The Body Movers" series by Stephanie Bond.
