Summer/Neighbors/Etiquette

I love the sound of the lawn mower and the smell of fresh cut grass. They are two of the things I most associate with summer. I try to be a good neighbor. I am not a morning person so don't cut the grass early but don't really mind if a neighbor does on the weekend. If I can see the neighbors setting up for a party I would try to get the grass cut first or hold off a day but sometimes that isn't always possible. I am out of town a lot and sometimes I have to cut it on the day I have planned, especially if they are calling for rain for the next week straight.

Thanks for the replies. I really think that the wife was mad just by her reaction but she hasn't said anything. The funny thing is that the husband was cutting his grass today~ right at nap time (not mine, the kids ;)) It didn't upset me. I just closed the windows. If it had been a party, I think that we would have waited. It was pretty long from all of the rain so we couldn't really hold off more than another day.

Thanks again!

Our back neighbor always mows at dinner time, sometimes we go in when he does. Its nothing personal, we realize that this is the time its convenient for him to mow, but we just can't enjoy our dinner outside while he does it. It happens so often that through the years dh and I have joked that he secretly watches us and waits to mow until he sees us set the outside table  It part of living in a sub-division and we completely understand, I'm sure your neighbors do too.

FWIW--I run inside anytime any of our neighbors cut the grass, regardless of time of day. I'm allergic and inhaling the fresh cut grass sends me into a frenzy. I'll return outside (if I desire to) when the initial "stink" passes.

Since everyone went inside, I doubt it was an allergy issue. If in your shoes, I probably wouldn't have waited all day to do the grass. I would have done it at my convenience. At least that is what they do down here in Florida. Your yard--you do what you gotta do as long as it is after 8am.

And my reaction--if I appear "mad"--it is usually b/c I'm mad at myself for not realizing that someone is about to cut their lawn and I catch that first wiff.

This is another reason I'm so glad we live in the woods :goodvibes Having to worry about what the neighbors may think of when we mow our lawn is not a worry for us :goodvibes

Ah...the joys of living in a subdivision.

We know all of our adjoining neighbors pretty well. The only time we haven't mowed when we needed to was when they asked (politely) if we could hold off b/c they had family coming in for their DS's First Communion. So of course, that was fine with us. Other than that, we use the 8-8 rule as well (only mowing between 8A-8P).

Now the neighbors behind us (in the other cul-de-sac)...that is totally different. We are pretty much go-with-the-flow, but they have a swimming pool, and our yard sits much higher. So even with their privacy fence, we can see everything in their back yard from our bedroom windows. I thought they would realize that, but apparently when the parents were out of town, the college son and his GF decided to go skinny dipping :scared1:. Yup, boy did I get a surprise when I glanced out my window to see what was going on...
