Summer Homework?

yes - our school sends home suggested reading and a request they keep up on their reading, writing, spelling skills......and that kids are better off if they keep fresh over the summer...

the first year , I bought workbooks - the school/teacher has sent home resources since...

we will be doing all of the above along with keeping up on music practice!!!

It is easy to get it in during the morning (certainly not every morning though) - then there is the rest of the day to have fun and chill!

Since schools around here (NJ) are open in July for ESY and summer school - it definitely wouldn't be a big deal to add another few weeks in August. A hot day in July or September isn't much different than a hot day in August.

I agree, but I think I've read that one of the biggest hurdles to year-round school on the east coast are the shore towns, especially in NJ (think of all the Atlantic City casinos with lots of money to toss around come election time). They rely on high-schoolers to staff their businesses during the summer, and they rely on families coming to the shore all summer long and spending money.

I have DS do all of his summer homework (small packet & keep track of summer reading). My SIL doesn't have her kids do any of their summer packets until the week before school starts and then she's all snarky when the teacher wants it turned in and the kids haven't finished yet. Around here, most people have their kids do the work.

Personally, I don't think it's any big deal to expect kids to do an average of an half hour or less of brain work on each weekday during the summer.

I would imagine that the teachers get a good idea of which parents are going to be supportive during the school year based on which kids come in with their summer packets completed.

I'm in NY State too and have worked summer school. Even though we get some hot days, they aren't as bad as any other hot day at the end of June or in Sept. Anyway, if the State or City makes it so, they'll make it so. Not much I can do about it. DS's school can be unbearable in the late spring and summer months yet they run summer school (and VBS) through August. I have taught in schools on 100* days and the kids get through.

Exactly -- and NJ weather isn't much different than NY State weather!

We have summer school here but the kids are out of there by 11:30am and that is before it gets really hot out. I was there the other day for the class party and I can not imagine being in that room if it was any hotter out, it was brutal in there, there was no way the kids are concentrating on their work, most are busy trying to fan themselves to keep themselves cool

We have this situation exactly..Way too hot in the schools, they are cooking in there.

I have my kids read 30 min per day, and in August we get into "school mode", and I play teacher every evening...

My daughter is ahead in everything in school, and I don't have to push her, but my son 11, has to be PUSHED..

We don't have summer packages, but are encouraged to keep up some kind of work, and I do.
