I have a job interview at the high school that I teach at for a summer camp teacher position. The camp has 4 teachers, art, science, PE and the fourth gets to create their own class. They can change their class every 2 weeks if they want.
I am looking for the fourth teacher position.

If you were a child between the ages 6-11 what fourth class would you want to have at summer camp.

STEM/STEAM , survival skills and cooking are all pretty hot right now. Good luck!

I was going to say cooking too, but I don't know too many 8 y.o.'s that would be excited for math class at summer camp. :p

At camp STEM/STEAM would be more like labs, engineering , design, inventors lab etc
Not algebra :)
But I do teach a math games class that is very popular!

I do kind of like the idea of survival class but 6 is kind of young, and I'm not sure you'd have enough material to fill two weeks at a time. Maybe.

My kids did this when they were in grade school and their favorites were camping skills, French, art and drama.

I would go with cooking or baking. My son's camp did that and it was one of his favorite activities.

Thanks for the suggestions. My certificate is in English. So one session I was thinking of doing a creative writing. Like create your own short stories.

I like the baking idea. Computers is also a possibility.

My MIL is super into steam and has a company that focuses on tech for girls so maybe with her guidance I can set up some lesson plans for that. Since I'm quite horrible at it.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Keep them coming tho I love hearing everyone's ideas.

I taught survival skills as part of a year long health and safety class. That portion lasted 10 class periods and could have gone much longer. But I included first aid. 6 year olds a bandaids and a couple ace bandages and they will be thrilled!
The big thing is whether you have outside space? Shelter building was a huge hit as well as coming up with water collection/purification devices. Lots on YouTube to help.

Pinterest and YouTube have a lot of simple steam projects.

I think with language arts I might jazz it up a bit. Maybe have the kids write and then perform a piece on the last day? Or maybe book club? That way with the younger kids you could do a craft or something that goes with the the book- older kids could write something in the style of the book..

I know Harry Potter theme camp is still big here... you could probably find a million pinterest projects for Hogwarts class.

Our school district offers summer fun sessions. The first ones to fill are the STEM classes, followed by cooking and theater. Anything to "school-ish" rarely fills, including creative writing (that usually ends up getting cancelled).

Ooh, seeing that your background is in English, I like this a lot! You could do different book themes on different days/weeks (depending on how long your class periods are). - DS did a Harry Potter day at a camp once, and they played a "muggle" version of "quidditch". He had a blast!

Book themes could incorporate other subjects as well - geography, language, even cooking something that the characters eat in the story!
