'Sum Ting Wong’: Intern blamed for leaking fake names of Asiana pilots

Made me think of this:

I dont think the airline should see one dime, its their fault people were injured and killed wether its bad equipment or putting a pilot with not enough experience in the seat. Its way worse than a racial joke. The airline is who people should be outraged with.

They are two separate issues in my opinion.

:thumbsup2 Somebody took the time to make a nice graphic for the broadcast, even. It's hard to believe that NOBODY caught this. I can just imagine how the CEO reacted when he heard it. IMO, the station SHOULD be sued. It was a terribly insensitive thing at a very sensitive time. I don't' know how a television station operates, but I'm pretty sure that at least 2 people had to have seen that script before it was read. I realize that the person who submitted this probably thought it was a hilarious joke, but it's not--it's a racist joke. I'm pretty sure that if someone listed the pilots with obviously made up Jewish names or African-American names or Polish names the entire U.S. would be on them like white on rice!

I'm sorry, I just can't take you seriously when you use the term "like white on rice" while ranting about Asian racism. Not sure if you intended it that way or not but......yeah.......

Excuse me:confused3 "I'll be on him like white on rice" is not a racist statement. It means you can't get any closer to someone than that. It's a very common phrase we use in the deep south, similar to "like ducks on a June bug." It has nothing to do with people of other cultures.

"Like white on rice" has nothing to do with race. :rolleyes2

I'm not endorsing what the Intern did, but part of me is really disappointed the kid missed the opportunity to use Long Duck Dong:

...I also can't believe the TV station fell for it!

haha. Now thats funny!

"Like white on rice" has NOTHING to do with Asians. Nothing. I have heard the phrase my entire life. It is not remotely racist.

Do you regularly associate rice exclusively with Asians?

I'm just so surprised it made it past the Chyron operator, the producer, and the news desk.

I can't blame the anchor. Sometimes they just have to read on the fly; I doubt someone of her experience in reading things to sound like she's read them before could even GO that fast in their brain. Newsanchors are usually great actors.

Ya i hear ya. The tv station did not ruin their reputation, thats for certain!
Actually I would not sue. They are claiming KTVU ruined their reputation. No the pilots crashing the plane ruined their reputation. People need to stop thinking that a lawsuits is supposed to the place of an apology. KTVU was rude, insensitive, and people need to be fired. I am all for firing whoever did this. But expecting KTVU to give them money for being jerks? Nope not buying it!

I definitely dont blame the anchor either. There were, im guessing, many people under her who should have caught this, but didnt. I read somewhere that the tv station indicated that nobody caught the error because nobody sounded the names out, out loud. Seriously?? I didnt say the names out loud and even i noticed it right away.

OK, lets say someone at the station did think "hey, these don't sound right". Then someone calls the NTSB and says "are these really the names of the pilots?" The answer they get (from the NTSB) is "yes".

So, the station HAS confirmation from a reliable source. Are they supposed to think "this source is wrong"?

In this instance, YES!!!

this is so unbelievable that anyone could think this is real. Truly amazing how stupid people can be!

YES! If there's any doubt, dont say the names on the air. Anyone with half a brain could see its a prank. know what i mean?

What????? Yes. Emphatically yes. In this case, it is so incredibly blatently obvious that the names are wrong, that yes - even with "confirmation" from the NTSB, you do not go to press with those names and you assume the source is wrong.

In addition to the "prank" aspect, it's also clearly a case of a news station caring more about being first than being right.

I think they call that fact checking and it's something they're supposed to do. I don't see what the big deal is. I didn't "get it" that there was something wrong with the names until they started reading them out loud on TV. People actually have those surnames in real life.

Anyone with half a brain would also find it odd that a Korean airline would have 4 pilots with Chinese sounding names.

It's something they did though.

I wouldn't know the difference between a 'Chinese' sounding name and a 'Korean' sounding name. :confused3
