Suitcase Weights allowance

This will not be the most accurate method but what we do is for us to weigh someone on the bathroom scales and then they stand back on them carrying the suitcase. The difference between the two weight measurements will be the weight of the case.

Household scales tend not to weigh accuratley but they will still be consistent. Therefore the weight diff betwenn the two should be pretty accurate.

this is Ok going out, but we always worry coming back (loaded with all the extra goodies we've bought!!) and there's no scales in most hotel rooms, so I was just thinking these would give a close guide if we were over or not

We tend not to do much shopping and take a holdall type bag in one of our cases for the return flight.

I'm a scrapbooker so tend to buy lots of supplies out there (much cheaper and lots more variety) but paper and albums are really heavy, that's why we panic on the way back!

I am a scrapbooker too
,I have paid extra to double our baggage allowance so hopefully we will be ok between the 4 of us!

That's a brilliant idea - why haven't I thought of that before?? !!

We (5 in total) flew back with Virgin on Thursday, we had the maximum 10 bags between us, plus a piece of hand luggage each. When we checked in at Downtown Disney they were thinking of charging us $35 because one of the bags was over weight, but then decided another one was well under weight and not to bother getting us to re-pack. How they knew the weights was that one of the large truck drivers lifted each bag in turn, no sign of a set of scales anywhere. The hand luggage was well over, but that stayed in the cars of course.

We did get stopped in customs at Gatwick, I think because my sister had a holdall that looked very square in shape, as if it was full of boxes. In fact it was full of clothes and must of been squashed into that shape in the hold, once he saw that we were on our way with never a mention of gifts and only a passing question about booze.

I must join in and say how miserly some of the airlines are with the luggage allowance, we are no longer able to take enough clothes and toiletries for a 2 week holiday 20kgs is not much when you factor in a case with clothes and shoes and toiletries, we went to Australia for 4 weeks and were allowed only 20kgs with Quanatas we had 11 flights in total and having buying souviners etc in Hong KOng, Sydney etc we actually had to throw things away, we did try to post but that was expensive too,

We are going to Florida in May I intend to take no toiletries and just enough clothes to last a couple of days and buy new whilst there,also the hand luggage is now restricted, which is ok but they should give you extra allowance for the checked in luggage.

I know there are limits to the weights a plane can carry etc but you should be able to pre buy at a reasonable cost not be embarresed at check in.

when we went to Africa last year, our final stop was Zambia where I saw the most gorgeous carved elephant that was soooo heavy, so I swapped some of my clothes as part payment for it, making my case lighter for it, and also a better bargain for me too!
