I need suggestions for DH's 50th birthday trip. What was your favorite non Disney vacation? We will probably go the second week in April 2013 and would like warm weather. Open to all suggestions. We are both fairly active and would not do well on an island that is very laid back. Maybe a cruise? We've done 2 4 day cruises with the kids, but this time it is just us. TIA

I would recommend a cruise. We love cruising. Check out cruisecritic.com. It is like the DIS for cruises.

We have sailed a bunch of lines...Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival and Princess and loved them all. BUT..My suggestion is to really research the ship you may be considering. Some are definitely better than others...even within one cruise line. We prefer a newer, larger ship with lots to do.

Or...how about an all-inclusive if you want a land based vacation. You can check out allinclusiveoutlet.com for some ideas.

Another suggestion...in the Florida Keys is Hawks Cay Resort.

Or...bareboating out of the Virgin Islands? You basically charter a boat...motor or sail with your own "crew". They provision the boat and take you wherever you want to go. For this, I would check out VINOW.com.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

We did the package that included the two night sail away on the 44' sailing yaght. It was amazing! We also did some snorkeling, hiked the volcano, went to the Falls of Baliene (sp?), did a tour of the city and a whale watch.

I love cruising because you can be as lazy or active as you want to be, and you have the opportunity to hit several destinations. Sometimes I just want to sit up on deck in the sun and read a book, other times I am excited to check out all the activities on the ship. I love that you have the choice of many different excursions at each stop, or of course you can just stay on the boat. Always something going on. And it helps that it's generally less expensive than staying at a hotel, and all your food is included.

Have a fun trip!

Is there something special your DH would like to do? DH is a golfer and his dream was to play Pebble Beach, so that was his 50th birthday gift/trip. While it would have been nice for us to go together, it made more sense for him to go with another golfer - his brother. They had an amazing trip and played golf almost every day. They spent 2 nights at a Pebble Beach resort (required to book tee times in advance) and played 2 of the 3 PB courses.

By splitting the costs with his brother, it made the trip much more affordable and we have FF miles we used for airfare. I really wanted to be able to do this while he was in good health and could really enjoy himself. He said it was the most amazing gift ever!

Last year, my dh and I spent 10 days between yountville, San Fran, Monterey, and San Louis obispo. It was an amazing trip and I wish we could repeat it!! I started with an itinerary from Frommers and tweaked it with a lot of research. It was a trip of a lifetime...we're also from Ohio, so if you already live on the west coast it prob wouldn't be as meaningful.

DH and I are debating whether to do Hawaii as a couple or with kids--I would think you could be pretty active there.....and Vegas would be fun too! I like the idea of looking at what he likes to do and going along with that too though!:thumbsup2

Vegas,- lots of fun we went for my BFF's DH 50th last year and we had such a great time we are going back this year to do it all again.

Rent a house on Cape San Blas in Fl, the water is so beautiful, not much night life but lots to do during the day, very romantic walks on the beach at sunset.

If you like to party head for South Beach, lots to do and see..... or head to the end of the road, Key West, laid back lots and lots to see day or night. Really a good place to connect again with the one you love.

another vote for vegas! i did vegas/AZ this fall and loved it. i mean i like disney but it was so nice to get out and explore. if you are not into the big lights and gambling vegas has to offer, look in to AZ. there is tons to do and the scenery is beautiful.

New Orleans, but please stay away during Mardi Gras. Total zoo then. Beautiful town filled with beautiful people. Extraordinary food. Not too expensive. Tons to do.

Another vote for Vegas. We also had awesome kid free trips to New Orleans, NYC, England, and France.

What does your DH like to do?

One year for our anniversary we went on an Alaskan cruise and loved it. Lots of chances to be active both on and off ship. We've also loved the time we've spent in Vegas and we like to go kid free trips to Branson occasionally as well.

He loves the ocean and food! No real hobbies besides working out but he likes nature. The northern California trip sounds great but I think early April would be too cold to fully enjoy the coast.....We loved New Orleans 2 years ago... I was considering a few days there to see Cajun country since we didn't leave the city last time followed by a cruise. Europe, almost any city would be ideal if we could find decent airfare.
