Suddenly nervous about hotel choice...

Because my family waited late to book (-_-...) we didn't get the Park Vue like we planned..we got rooms at the carousel instead, and i have heard *horrible* things about it. Can anybody reassure me that we aren't staying in a dump? Please? I'm not a hotel snob or anything but i want the rooms to be clean, and everyone keeps saying they're gross! :scared::scared::scared:

I would call and ensure construction is done. I had a friend that stayed there recently, and her tv didn't work (I presume because of construction? They were all fuzzy), phone was dead, and pool wasn't available.

If all that's taken care of when it's time for you to arrive, I think you'll be okay.

What about another hotel, like Candy Cane Inn, or something? I would keep checking other hotels online reservation sites - there are a lot of "reservation hoarders" who keep rooms until the last minute and then cancel - something may come up.

Construction will apparently be finished on the 15th of June, and we arrive on the 24th. I'm really, really hoping it'll be done on schedule...but I don't know if they're remodleing everything or just the pool or...I don't know. As for another hotel... I would do that but I'm not in charge of the hotel reservations so I wouldn't be able to do it personally, and my family thinks the hotel's photos on the website look nice enough...they do look nice, but I'm worried those are just models or something, not legit room photos.

From what you say, it seems it is out of your hands then, so if there is nothing else you can do, instead of stressing about it, go, check it out, and if you are not satisfied this time, don't go back to the same place again. There were times when my family couldn't get any bookings in South Harbor other then the worst places ever (Carousel doesn't get anywhere close to the worst, believe me!) Anyway, we still went for them because we agreed we wanted to enjoy DL in spite of the not-so-ideal accommodations. The hotel wasn't the highlight of our trip. The time we spent in the hotel was so much less compared to the fun in the parks and we were always so tired that it really didn't matter as long as we found a nicely made bed to crash at night. I would say even the worst places were tolerable. It has always been an experience, a temporary experience. Nothing we couldn't handle.

My family stayed at the Carousel 3-4 years ago. It was totally fine. It definitely was not a dump. The breakfast was just so-so, the donuts were not very fresh but for just a quick bite it was fine. The short walk (just across the street) made it worth it. Do not worry at all just look forward to your trip! ;)

We stayed at the Carousel in Jan./08 and it was perfectly fine. Our room was very clean, housekeeping was excellent, and we thought that the breakfast was more than adequate. You absolutely cannot beat the short walk across the street to the parks. Enjoy!:goodvibes

Shakthi- I suppose you're right. Better to just go with the flow...Like I said, as long as it's clean and the bed is nice and neat...

1disneynutt and albertamom- Thank you! You just made me feel better. The walk is going to be great for us since we'll have a not-yet two year old in tow who will need naps, and if housekeeping is good, then i'm happy! :goodvibes

I stayed there twice. October 2006 and October 2008. The second time we stayed we were in the back half of the building in a suite...

aside from the a/c being loud I loved it..and I think it only seemed loud because there was a wooden floor in the room so there was nothing to absorb the sound.

For the price and the location, I was extremely happy.

Hope your trip is great.

What's wrong with The Carousel? We have stayed there twice and it was perfectly fine. Clean, nice, great location. We liked it a lot. NONE of the hotels on Harbor Blvd. are anywhere close to 4 stars, so as long as that is not what you are expecting, you will be fine.

Yup, I've stayed at the Carousel 3 times and have never had a problem. I think you'll be fine :) I agree, don't expect 4 star on Harbor. Just a clean room and a short walk to the parks. :thumbsup2

We used to stay at the Carousel Inn and I would say we quite staying there more from frustration. We stay off season and they kept raising their rates and then added a $20 parking fee. I was able to find the Paradise Pier for less on Expedia and their resort fee was less.

One day when I took my kids back for a nap I fond this outside of the room:

I put the do not disturb sign on the door locked the door and put the kids down for a nap. About 30 minutes later the door opened and a two service men came in to replace the toilet. Both kids were woken up. I immediately went down to talk to a manager. There was not one on shift and continued to be no manager for or remaining 3 days. After that we said no more Carousel.

If I can't find a good deal on the Paradise Pier then I usually just Pricelline a room. Last week my sister got the Doubletree for $45.

For us personally the raising of the rates, addition of a parking fee, and lack of costumer service was our breaking point. That being said the hotel itself is fine.

The last time I stayed there it was nice. It has been a long time though. I stayed there durning the 4th of July. I stayed in a room above the car park and it was no problems with noise or anything. I must add that this was 14 years ago. I liked it though. I would stay there again.

Were you there in late Jan?

Although I would not stay there again, many other people disagree with me. If you're looking at reviews on tripadvisor, well, stop looking there. For some reason, the reviews there are generally FAR more negative than anywhere else, and it feels suspicious to me sometimes.

Anyway, I stayed one night, solo, at Carousel in late Jan '08. I don't know about housekeeping b/c I didn't experience their work (other than the room seemed fine when I got there). I was gone most of the day.

I got in late, after running around DL and DCA like a madwoman, and needed a hot shower for my muscles. Well, it turned out that the shower curtain mysteriously leaked through (I had it "sealed" with water, you know what I mean, against the side of the tub wall, it was long enough, there were no gaps) and flooded the bathroom and the sink area outside the bathroom (bathroom door was closed, as I always do even when alone, so it went under the door). AUGH.

When I opened the bathroom door, despite having had the fan on, the steam from the bathroom set off the smoke detector.

Did I mention this was around midnight?

Now we get into the customer service part.

I am short and coudln't really reach the smoke detector button even while standing on the bed. The alarm kept going off and on and off and on.

I called down to the front desk to let them know there was NOT a fire, it was the steam, and I had a flood.

They said "oh yeah, we wondered what the alarm was about. After what happened today in Vegas." Turns out that was the day of the Monte Carlo hotel fire in Vegas. So even though they were already concerned about hotel fires, they just *wondered* what the alarm at midnight was all about.

At that point the alarm turned off again so they didn't send anyone up.

I got myself a bit more together, and to get the steam out of the room I had to open the room door. At midnight, on a solo trip. NOT what I would generally do!

The alarm continued to go on and off, sigh. I used all the towels to mop up the flood.

Either I called them back or they called me (this is all in my first solo trip report, but I'm going by memory here) and they wanted to make sure what was setting off the alarm. Like I was smoking up a storm or something. Well, that would have been better accomplished by actually coming up to the room, now wouldn't it? But they never did.

And when I checked out, they didn't care, and didn't listen to my complaint that they didn't come up to help me turn off the alarm (which is what I asked for in my first call).

The breakfast was awful. The fruit was sad, the coffee cups tiny. And it started too late to really sit down and eat AND get over to the gates for park opening, so I grabbed a tiny cup and a banana or something and probably some yucko mini donut and ran.

Others, who don't have the same alarm and flood experience as I did, would have been more rested, wouldn't have been annoyed at the employees, and perhaps would have grabbed two cups of coffee, LOL.

It's why I give my FULL experience. This is what happened on MY stay, this is why I feel the way I do. It's probably a very rare experience.

Oh, and they were very kind about keeping my bags after I checked out but before I left...they kept them until around 5 when I came back to get my shuttle. So that was nice.

I didn't know they are doing construction. What's interesting is that they are a sister motel to the Anabella, and the rooms are incredibly similar in layout. Why is it interesting? Because I LOVED the Anabella, LOL. :goodvibes

And there are people who disagree with me on that one, too! :rotfl:

I was looking at Tripadviser, yes. The part that scared me were the pictures showing the mold in the bathroom. I knew it wasn't gonna be fancy and I was fine with that...but all the mold...I just wanted a clean room, bleh to mold.

Still, hopefully tripadviser is being more negative than it should be about the place. The comments above did help (Although the toilet one certainly startled me...). I am surprised about the customer service complaints, though. Customer service is what has generally been the most praised.

We had stayed there once in 2007 and it was in the little building in the back. This was a few years ago, but I thought that the room was clean and the beds were comfy. Honestly, I didn't have any problems other than the parking. I have a big SUV and I was lucky to park in a spot where it was easy to get in and out. I have stayed in worse on Harbor blvd...
