My cat likes to sleep on the kitchen chairs. She woke up and stretched her arms upward along the back of the chair, and one arm fell between the slats on the back of the chair and became wedged there. She instantly started screaming in pain. I am soooo lucky that I was home. Her arm was really stuck. It took several seconds for me to get it unstuck, and she was SCREAMING the entire time :( Fortunately she did not break her arm, but she would have if nobody had been home to push her arm back upwards to free her. It took some force for me to free her arm...it was THAT stuck.

I called DH and told him that we are getting rid of these chairs TODAY. I had no idea that something like that could happen :( These are just regular kitchen/dining chairs that happen to have decorative slats close together on the back. I am sick over what could have happened to her if nobody had been home.

The poor thing. So glad you were home and able to help.

I was on the phone with DVC Member Services of all places when it happened too. The poor CM was really worried because she could hear my cat screaming. I still can't believe that that happened. These chairs have got to go asap.

There are nice slipcovers for kitchen/dining room chairs; perhaps that would be a good solution for you?

Maybe that could work. Do they make these so that they can be tied or velcro'd on, though? Otherwise, she could easily pull them off if she wanted to. She is very dexterous, owing to her above-average number of fingers per paw :rotfl2:

Wow, that is scary! I'm glad you were right there.

I'm curious about this, though. :teeth: How many fingers does your kitty have?

Twelve :teeth: She is just that much more highly evolved than the rest of us :rotfl:

Poor kitty! I'm so glad you were home to help her.

The slipcovers sound like a good idea to me.

I am so sorry this happened to your kitty kat!! I have nightmares of something happening to my pets when I'm not home. So glad you were there to help the poor thing become unstuck.

Poor kitty. Luckily you were home to rescue her. I had to think if my chairs could do that, but our slats are pretty far apart, so I think we are safe. My cat just broke one of our chairs a few months ago. She knocked it over and it cracked on the dining room. I wouldn't get slip covers unless you can tie them on, because if you cat is like ours, they would probably be very tempting play items.

You know, I was reading your post and the first thing that popped into my head, is that if your kitty's paw could get terribly stuck, I bet a child's finger's could too!!! Hope the slipcover works, otherwise, I don't think those chairs are too safe! Poor thing....

When our cat was just a kitten, she took a run at the kitchen chair, jumped up on it and got her head caught between the slats in the back of the chair :earseek:

It was just a good thing that I was right there in the kitchen with her and she was on the seat of the chair. I shudder to think if she was alone and had managed to get caught from the backside of the chair.

That same day I took bathroom towels and pinned them securely on the backs of the chairs until she was big enough that her head wouldn't fit through anymore.

Sorry about your kitty.

Mine broke her knees (well--destroyed all the ligaments in both kitty "knees") by running in circles around a toy by our coffee table. She hit the table perfectly. An injury hardly ever seen in a kitty in one leg, let alone two.

Freak accidents happen and I am glad you were home to rescue her.

So glad she's OK! :)

When my cat was a baby, she got stuck inside our reclining couch. DH thought he CUT HER IN HALF when he got up from the couch. :earseek:

I was in tears, so I know how scared you must have been. Thankfully, both our kitties survived nicely. :sunny:

Poor cat! I'm glad she's okay, though. Slipcovers sound like the way to go.

I have a double-pawed kitty, too! He has 6 on each paw. The vet says it's very rare to have a cat double-pawed on the front and back.

I think this cat plays dumb to get sympathy. He looks pathetic....he's very tall and very thin and always has this look of horror on his face. But, if I had to place a bet, I'd bet it was him who took my car keys off the counter and put them in the litter box making me go crazy searching for them and forcing me to break into my own car to get my spare keys (don't ask....it's all DH's fault they were in there).

I hope the kitty is feeling better. It's horrible to hear your cats cry in pain. :guilty:

When our cats were kittens one of them got his head stuck in the slats of our kitchen chairs. Scared us both. He was smart enough not to do it again, but has used several of his other 9 Lives on other things around the house.

So far our current kittens have not done anything too dangerous, but I'm watching them. Scary!

Apparently double-pawed cats are only really common to New England and Halifax. Ours also has extra "duclaws" in the back. Our old vet said that that was rare too...maybe it's not as rare as they think, LOL!

OMG, if my cat ever hides anything on us in the litterbox, we'll be having a serious chat with her :rotfl: That is so gross :earseek:

As you all probably know, be very careful with shopping bags that have handles. Our same cat that got his head stuck in the chair (Tigger) got a shopping bag around his neck one time. Thankfully we were home for that, too. He was running around the house with the shopping bag like a parachute behind him. It was almost a funny sight, except for the knowledge that eh could have killed himself. He also fell twice from our upper level to the foyer (through the banister). He also used to like to perch on the railing over on that same banister, the crazy cat! I used to keep a squirt bottle nearby and would squirt him down (obviously I was in the foyer LOL). So far our kittens have not done all these things and Tigger's sister (Belle, of course) never had all these close calls that her brother did.
