Substitutions at Kona

My fiance and I are visiting in January 2020 and he had expressed interest in Kona Cafe when I booked or ADRs.
I chose Ohana instead as I figured he would enjoy it but the shrimp is spicy (I can't do spicy food), the noodles may have onions, the coconut bread I can't eat because I am allergic to coconut, and the mixed veggies have onions.

I looked at Kona but we were going for the steak and all come with arugula (neither of us likes arugula, spinach is fine) and onions (I can't eat onions). The website now says herb butter instead of arugula.

What substitutions does Disney do at Kona for these sides? I am fine with the other sides like the mashed potatoes or the brocollini.

Any help is appreciated.

The beef tenderloin, NY strip steak, and salmon come with accompiants of either cooked onions or wakame , not sides which are listed at a separate price thus you can have which ever you choose.
HTH

PS- I think you looked at an older menu as they used to serve steak with arugla.

'Ohana can accommodate dietary issues.

My post does mention the herb butter on the menu instead of the arugula :)

I had contacted Disney about the bread and they said since it's made ahead of time, they can't change the coconut pineapple bread for us. When we visit Ohana, I will mention the onions and see what happens.

Understood yet still doesn't change that you can get whatever side dish you want which seemed to be the main question of your thread. Since it seems you are now back to eating at 'Ohana instead of Kona it's all fine:).

We have always had success making substitutions at Kona. Last trip they even brought us some Bread Pudding from Tambu Lounge.

Why not just stick with Kona since that's what your fiance wanted? I've never had an issue with requesting an alternate side at a restaurant, and it's likely easier for them to do at Kona since they have a full menu, unlike Ohana.

The photos I've seen of the steak and braised cipollini at Kona show one cipollini onion atop the steak. You can ask what other veggie can be subbed for it. Typically the Disney restaurants will allow you to sub something that is offered as a side in the description of another entree. The Kona menu is divided into specific entree categories, but fries, grilled bok choy and mashed potatoes are among the sides listed for other entrees.

The sides listed in the section titled "Sides" is a larger portion. If you are subbing for the cipollini you will get a smaller portion on your dish with the steak.

without any doubt, Disney is the best place to eat if you have any dietary restrictions! You're not talking about preferences but rather allergies or foods you must avoid. I can't have any seasonings and onions aren't safe either and I've never had any trouble getting food that's safe for me to eat. Simply add your restrictions to your reservations and when you get to any restaurant. table or counter service, mention you have food allergies and that you need to speak to a chef. They will be more than happy to help make your meal safe. Happy eating!

As to Kona Cafe, you can just tell them to leave the cipollini off.

As to the Ohana and the mixed veggies. That may be hard as they may pre-mixed during the prep stage.
