substituting deserts for CS meals

Just got back and all the CS places we went to I asked if I could sub the desert for another item. All places said yes. I was able to get a cup of soup, yogurt, fry, fruit, etc instead of the desert. Certainly saved a few calories and my DD under 3 usually ate the extra. Worked out great. So, if you don't want that prepackaged brownie - just ask and you have choices. This was my 3rd time on dining and never knew - thought I would pass along!

Thanks, that's good to know! :goodvibes
Can you give me any specific places you went to and what you got instead?

I will have to ask my husband for a complete list - but I do recall:

Cosmic Rays - yogurt or soup.
Burger Place outside of Tower of Terror - soup or side salad or fry
Artist Palette (saratoga springs) - piece of fruit, little box cereal

That is great to know - sometimes one of my kids is hungry for lunch, maybe the other one isn't so hungry, but would like a little something. They could both be satisfied - plus I can't imagine the waste this can avoid! My kids absolutely hate the apple sauce at Disney, and DS can't eat brownies (unless they're Divvies or something, he's egg allergic) or cookies.

Thanks so much for that great info!

I have learned so much from the nice folks here!

That's good to know! We are on the DDP next week and I am looking for ways to keep everyone happy and fed without getting sick of the same things - the kids meals are so similar everywhere, it's good to know you can mix it up a bit.

I never knew that and we've had the plan two years in a row. Hope that is still the case when we go in May, 2009.

Thanks for passing along the information. We will definitely have to ask when we are there in a few days.

Great information! We are going next week as well and have a VERY picky four year old who doesn't eat much so this might give her a few more choices. Thanks:)

Just remember - just because one DISer, or a handful of DISers, had one experience or set of experiences does not mean that's what will happen when the next person asks. Doesn't mean it won't, either - but "mdurette on the DIS Boards said..." isn't a valid argument.

Maybe, with this economy Disney is being more flexible. It doesn't hurt to ask if you want an exception. I would think Disney would be happy to do this especially if the item is cheaper than the dessert. Also, Disney is suppose to be taking strides towards healthier eating and less dessert would sure qualify.

I do see if this gets out of hand with too many requests, Disney will squash the idea.

This is awesome information! It makes me wonder if my girls could do some sharing of CS meals if we can get an additional side item (which is often cheaper than the dessert). Hmmm...

I hope this stays true. It's great news for my diabetic husband! I do wish we had the option of appetizer or dessert. Then he could get the appetizer and I the dessert...and share them! Make sense to us. He would much rather have a cup of soup or an added side of veggies or fruits then a dessert.

I guess it shows it never hurts to ask. I am sure that we will try that on our next trip. Usually we only eat two desserts between the 4 of us.

DH and I would do the exact same thing if there was a choice at TS restaurants. But Disney is very smart. They know that many people would do this. That would mean no extra apps would be ordered. Just look around here, especially at dining reviews...plenty of folks on the basic DDP order an app at TS places and pay OOP for it. Some even do this and opt not to get the dessert. Disney eats this up, so to speak. They make money that way, and they make more money! If they give us a choice, then they do not make EXTRA money off of us. They make more if we get the deluxe plan, which includes an app and a dessert but to many of us, like myself, the plan is way too much food and many credits go unused. That is why I will not get the deluxe plan. 4 of us multiplied by 10 nights would be 80 snacks alone, and on a 5-night trip with 3 of us on the plan (the little guy is under 3), we had 2 extra snack credits at the end of our trip (15 snacks allotted to us)! We brought some grapes and a rice krispie treat for the road which was nice, but I can't imagine using 80 snack credits PLUS 3 meals a day!!

I knew about the yogurt or fruit option for dessert. We also got a yogurt at Cosmic Ray's. Never tried to get anything like a salad. Sounds nice and I hope it is consistent!

Bonnie, I totally agree with what you are saying, but with DH "supposed" to be on a diet restrictions, it would be helpful to make that substitution. I told him that this might be an option for CS and he raised an eyebrow, so I think he'll give it a try.
We did the DxDP for just 2 nights in October and it was a CRAZY amount of food! We are not big breakfast eaters, so we could have split those, but then we would still end up with credits left. We ended up taking about 12 snacks on the cruise with us, and then brought them home! Had it been a summer trip, I could see using the snack credits for waters, but since the weather was beautiful, we didn't need to use them.
Looking forward to the next trip, and armed with this info, hopefully, we'll be able to eat a bit healthier!
