submersible missing near the Titanic

From last night:
"AP is now reporting that the support ship for the Titan submersible received a position ping from the Titan just before comms went down. It showed that the sub was just above the Titanic. I am hopeful that this is narrowing the search area considerably. No other news."

And yeah this sub looks like it was fabricated in someone's garage.

Here's what the sub looks like inside (different passengers, of course, maybe some of the same crew):

They bring a "urinal bottle" down with them....like you'd see in a hospital. They're only supposed to be down there for 10 hours. I would imagine it's awful if they're even still alive. I heard about the amount of air they carry, but without power (if they've lost it), I wonder if they're able to stay warm enough. Just a nightmarish way to go. If they are gone, I hope it was quick for them and not slowly running out of air.
If the hull was breeched, it was over before they knew what hit them.

Looking at the photos, inside and out, does NOT instill confidence in me! I will admit that I'm a complete wuss and would get claustrophobic as well a just, no.

If they can't get higher in depth--it's possible that they could release ballast and rise--then there's no hope of a rescue. The rescue vehicles simply couldn't go to that depth.

Coast guard (or Navy) Recovery craft can dive up to 20,000 feet. I just read that.

Send James Cameron - his sub can make 36,000! He also knows his way around the Titanic.

Serously, I do hope they can find these people and get them to the surface safely. It's terrible!

Doubt JCs sub can pull this one up and out of the water. But I am betting he is heavily invested in this news story!

No, true, but he might at least be able to help find it. Seriously, I'd probably at least give him a call.

I would bet he has already contacted someone offering to help in any way he can.

Gotta find any excuse to not actually work on all those Avatar sequels...

I have a feeling they are no longer with us but hope for a miracle. If they have perished I hope it was quick. The adults were able to make an educated decision regarding risks but the nineteen year old boy with his dad...tears me up.

Yeah you couldn't pay me $250K to go down in that thing yet alone the other way.

They are recovery craft. That means they bring the submersible back up with them.
Possibly. It depends on what size/weight they can bring up. Back in the Stone Age, I was peripherally involved when the Navy research vessel was recovering parts of Challenger. It was manned, but couldn't go anywhere near this depth, and it was collecting pieces. It's highly likely that the Navy's search and rescue/recovery capabilities have improved a lot since then.

They are not sure if any paying guests are onboard (an 8 day tour costs $250,000!)

I found this quote interesting (bolding mine)- Stockton Rush, the president of OceanGate, told The New York Times last summer that private exploration was needed to continue feeding public fascination with the wreck site.
I read thar Mr. Rush is one of the people on board, but I don’t know if the report was accurate. If so, I think he is paying a huge price for his words and actions. He did an interview where he said that safety regulations were making it difficult to explore the oceans and they complied with the regulations when they could. How anyone could have had confidence enough to get in one of his submersibles is beyond my comprehension. Perhaps that is the reason he is on board, if he is, to indicate his belief in what he was doing.

I also read that one of the men responsible for the discovery of the Titanic in the 80’s, Paul Nargeolet, may have been on board as well. In what capacity the article did not say, however, he should have been well aware of the risks of diving so deep, and what is required to make such a dive successful. Having two such people on board, makes me wonder if someone was trying to impress another, perhaps someone who could be an investor. Pure speculation on my part though.

I feel bad for them as human beings, not knowing what they might have suffered or are still suffering. It’s a sad situation for their families and friends as well. I would not wish that situation on my worst enemy. However, I don’t need to touch the top of my stove to know it will burn when it’s on and I don’t need to go in a sub to the bottom of the Atlantic to know it’s dangerous. Common sense should have told them this was a very bad idea. I hope the families get a resolution soon, whether the news is good or bad. Not knowing has to be horrific.

I believe it has been confirmed that Paul Nargeolet and Stockton Rush are onboard.
