stupid school rules

The rule is a good one. There are many perscription/illicit substances that may appear to be a non-harmful substance. Teachers & Administrators are not medical professional. By banning all substances, the gray areas are erased, and the notion that "well a tylenol is ok, but not a tylenol pm" or "this cold medicine is ok, but this other one has a trace of alcohol". Too many grey areas that will lead to problems and LITIGATION. I would contact the school, explain it as a misunderstanding, & ask for a number of detentions, to avoid a suspension being noted on her permanent transcript.

Our school has that policy for the reasons stated above. A few years ago they had problems with kids bringing x to school that looked just like Tylenol and then giving it to kids who asked for a Tylenol! :earseek:

We've also had a problem with kids drinking clear liquor mixed in with bottled soft drinks, water, Gatorage, etc.

I'm not that old (26) and it hasn't been that long since I was in high school and I am amazed at how different high school is now.

A couple of thoughts on why Zero is so 'stupid'.

First, having gone to school in the 50's (beatnik generation) and 60's/70's (flower power) it is amazing that we lived to have children for the next generation. How we survived without all these rules/regulatios I will never know.

Second, where is the common sense.. With no 'carry' rules then how do you handle someone with a 'nut' allergy who can no longer have an 'epi' available immediately. Imagine having to find the school nurse then get the medication to the person while hoping that nothing fatal happens. Same thing with Asthma. When an attack occurs the inhaler is needed immediately not 10/15 so minutes later.

Drop Zero and give teachers/administrators the ability to use common sense.

sure, just as soon as you outlaw lawyers, and make the media use common sense when they report about our schools. It just isn't possible in our society.

That is the problem with zero tolerance policies. Common sense is thrown out the window.

Look around. Whose common sense do you want? To bring it to the school level, some think their scouts should be able to carry their knives to school. Their kid is responsible and would never use the knife inappropriately. That's sensible until one of them slices a classmate. Then the cry goes up for standards and rules. Unable to separate wheat from chaff the administration removes any doubt.

This works in micro form all over America as parents shout out, "that's it, I don't want any of you kids using my bathroom again. No exceptions." Of course there are exceptions, you know there are. The kids probably know what the exceptions are, too. It's unspoken.

This rigidness occurs when the rulemakers abdicate and we're stuck with litigation targets making the rules. They know the rules are indefensible, but society holds them responsible for things they cannot possibly control.

Who should have known Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were caching an arsenal? The sherriff? The school? Maybe. I'd look to their parents first, but they behaved more like homeowners/landlords.

I don't know about other states but in Illinois it is State Law that students have to be allowed to carry their Asthma inhalers themselves as long as they have a Doctor's prescription. I don't know about EPI pens, but I imagine the Law is most likely the same.

I frequently send my children to school with benedryl or allergy meds hidden in their pockets. I tell them to go hide in a bathroom stall to take them if they need them. I'm a rebel that way. I'll probably be posting one of these threads someday. My son got stripped searched and suspended for contraband Benedryl. :earboy2:

To the OP -- take your daughter out to a movie and lunch that day.

I am also curious about how a teenager can be forced to drink milk. At my school and I am sure at all others (I am a Lunchroom manager) it it required that a milk be on the tray so it will be a reimbersable meal by the federal government.NO ONE is ever forced to drink the milk. Once the child puts their lunch number into the computer they can do whatever with the milk and everything else on the tray. I just don't understand this.....do they stand over each child to make sure they drink it????

at our schools, you can't even have a Tylenol or Advil, etc... You have to take it to the school nurse and go to their office when you have a headache.

Kids can hide any type of illegal drug and say it's a Tylenol, etc. (i.e. using the caplet type, dumping the real Tylenol out and put their own drugs in there in place).

I know it sounds like a dumb rule, but because there are SO many drugs in the schools, they have to make up dumb rules.

But the real question is WHY are they making her drink milk? How can they MAKE anyone do that?

At the school where I teach, students are no longer permitted to bring candy with them to school. Only teachers may distribute candy. We had a seminar where a nurse showed us what we thought were sweettarts and other normal looking sweets only to find out they were all illegal substances. You just can't tell nowadays. They even sell on the internet lipstick in which you can conceal drugs. The big thing in this region is using the hollow lollipop sticks as a way to snort and inhale drugs. Students will even use ordinary school markers to huff illegal substances or hide drugs. Kids are very clever and they are being marketed to. Zero tolerance is the only way to protect all the students. Something that may seem entirely innocent may not be...

Can someone answer the 'heart' of my question which is how did the students in the 50's thru 70's survive when there was no Zero Tolerance? According to some posting here and other things I have read without Zero students would be bringing lipsticks full of drugs, pockets full of uppers/downers, etc. knapsacks stocked with uzi's and bowie knives.

Go back into history some of the younger ones here. In the late 50's the 'beatnik' was the 'role model'. Look at one of the most popular TV shows, Dobie Gillis. Reefers were coming into their own at this time, big thing among the Jazz lovers. Then the 60's came and the 'revolution' happened. The British invaded America and 'won'. Flower Power, Dr. Leary, LSD, Mushrooms, etc.

What I think has happened, is not so much the increase in litigation but the increase in laziness and passing the buck that goes under the name of 'school administration'. When I was in school being sent to the Principals office meant something. They had the 'power' to decide what punishment to fit the crime.

Let us return to those days of old with a 'Hiyo Silver & Away'

Going to the principal's office only meant something because it's likely that parents agreed with the principal and his use of the 'power'.

Today, precious angels need to be protected from mean principals and hateful teachers. Schools make decisions about children after repeated all day sessions. Sadly, parents who spend 3 hours a day with the same kids have vastly different opinions about what they need for success.

JUST TO CLEAR THE RECORD, THEY DONT FORCE HER TO DRINK THE MILK...ITS THE ONLY CHOICE OF DRINK WITH YOUR LUNCH AND BEING A NONWASTEFUL PERSON...SHE DOESNT WANT TO THROW IT AWAY...NOW SHE WILL JUST GIVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE,AND SHE'LL GO TO THE GERM INFESTED WATER COOLER!
