I have a trip booked in June - starting June 21st. . I am thinking about cancelling and banking my points. I used 219 Oct 2019 points. My use year is October. I also borrowed 21 Oct 2020 points.
I think I can bank the 2019 points up until May 31. And possibly have the 21 Oct 2020 points that I borrowed returned to their original use year?
Your last possible banking date is May 31 for an Oct use year under normally applied rules. Moreover, points borrowed would remain borrowed and in your Oct 2019 use year if you cancel a reservation. Also, because your reservation is in June, you would need to cancel well before May 31 for those rules to apply because if you cancel 30 days or fewer from arrival date, all points go into holding and must be used by end of use year and can only be used to make reservations 60 days or fewer from date of arrival. Thus, if you have a June 21 arrival date, you must cancel by May 21 to be able to bank your points and not have all points in the reservation go into holding.
Under the modified coronavirus rules now in place, you can cancel less than 31 days out and bank any points in the reservation, and borrowed points would be returned to their use year. However, those rules do not yet necessarily apply to June reservations and there is no guarantee DVC will apply them to June reservations now if you were to cancel. Moreover, there is no guarantee those modified coronavirus rules will ever apply to June reservations even if the resorts remain closed in June. In other words, if you want to have the ability to cancel now and return borrowed points to your Oct use year, you need to call DVC and find out if that will even be a possibility.
We are in a similar situation with a June reservation. We are holding on to the reservation for now because I would need DVC to cancel so I can move the borrowed points back to their original UY. It's not great because I would like to make a backup reservation but I can't with my points tied up with the June reservation. I may book a cash reservation as a back up.
