stupid question I know - but why is Toad in the Hole so called????

I know, I know this is a really stupid question but it's bugging me cause I can't find out the answer, why on earth is sausages in a Yorkshire batter called 'Toad in the hole' - my 8 year old asked me the other day and I didn't know the answer and it has been bugging me ever since. So does anyone know!!!

I haven't been able to find out the answer either. Don't let Evil Cath see this or it might end up as tonights quiz question :teeth:

A hole dug by the Evil Pooh and Tigger, to take over the ride.........the filled it with Yorkshire Pudding Batter - so he could never escape, and baked it in a Giant oven::yes::
 
Pooh and Tigger could never be so evil :)

I wouldn't mind eating my way out though :teeth:
