Stupid question...but I have to ask

Gals,how do you get your DHs to dress up for dinner while on board?My DH is adamant that if we end up going (and I'm sure we will)he is NOT going to dress up for dinner. His idea of dressing up is a nice button down shirt or polo with clean,pressed jeans or khakis and a pair of nice loafers sans socks!Or with white tube socks! I'm not gonna even attempt to get him to rent a tux for a night at Palo's but how can I get him to dress in maybe nice slacks and a sport coat for dinner? I've tried everything I can think of from telling him everybody else will be doing it to telling him how good he looks all dressed up to even conceding to only a couple of nights in the 'fancy' resteraunts(the rest at Topsiders or whatever).
I am at my wit's end with this man of mine! What do I do with this guy?*sighs*

If he wears the khakis, he'll be fine for most nights, except formal and semi-formal nights. If you're gong on a 4 or 3 nighter, he'll be fine. Those cruises are MUCH less formal than the 7 night, with no set formal night. When DH and I cruise, he won't wear a tux and hates wearing a suit (wears one every day). He'll put it on for dinner, and then immediately changes upon the ending of dinner back into his "vacation clothes". Disney is a VERY casual line, one of the reasons DH prefers it to the other lines we've cruise. On our 4 night Wonder cruise, the only night I remember seeing somebody in a sportsjacket was in Triton's, the more formal restaurant. And then it was only 30% or so of the people eating.

Have you tried making a deal with him...if you know what I mean With my hubby, I think we're going to try to do Palo's for brunch so he won't have to dress up as much. I think that will work better for us too since we'll have to leave the little one at Flounders. Good luck talking your dh into dressing up!

I've tried that...he still balks!
We're thinking of booking a 7 night cruise and I know he only has ONE suit.One. We call it 'the zoot suit'. It's this ancient black/gray pinstripe double breasted,peg-legged number with HUGE shoulder pads.Put a black fedora on his head and gatlin gun in his hand and you'd swear he stepped out of The Untouchables. I am going to try, in the meantime, to buy him a new suit (or at least a new sports coat) to wear and hopefully this will work. We are planning on going in March of next year(keep your fingers crossed).

On my SIL's 7 day cruise a man that kept refusing to dress up...the table nexrt to him had his server, serve him on Paper plates....the guy got the hint and immediately went and changed....(I think it could have had a nasty ending but it didnt')...anyway maybe your DH might not want to take a chance that a stranger might make fun of him for not dressing appropriately...

Is there a special occasion between now and when you cruise that you can pick him up something as a present? A nice blazer and trousers.. and a nice shirt...? (Birthday? Annversary? Easter? Christmas?

Or just tell him not to worry about anything - you love him just the way he is.... then buy something and pack it and surprise him with it once you are on the ship LOL


Don't forget - he doesn't have to spend the whole night in the suit.. many people change after dinner to something more casual again.

Good Luck and I must say people seem to get stressed over this subject but on the ship you see all kinds of people from all walks of line and all tastes in clothing and everyone is treated the same way - we are all on vacation to be stress free... it will be fine!

DH would just stick his thumbs in his ears and go "Pbbttth" and continue to eat as if nothing had happened. I should know...I've lived with this playful Saggitarius for four years and we dated for 3 years before that.
Maybe I could email his mom...his birthday is in Nov but still...maybe she could find one of his dad's old sport coats that would fit him and still look good. His dad is a VERY snappy dresser.*drools* I just wish it had rubbed off on DH.

Even on formal night on the 7 night cruise we saw gentlemen in pressed khakis and button downs. He's not talking cut offs and a ripped Hooter's t-Shirt. Go and have fun. (Oh, and leave that Zoot suit at home! )

Kackis are fine for all nights except formal, and even then no one would stare, our table mate had a jean shirt with kacki's on formal night-not my cup of tea but if that is what he wanted to wear so be it.
My DH is no problem as he wears suits everyday so he likes getting dressed up. One thought might be to take him shopping and let him pick out something he is comfortable in. Like those Gentlemen's wherehouse commercials I see they find something dressy but relaxed for this blue collar guy. He looks great and everyone is happy-he didn't feel like he was in a costume. Also tell him that everyone changes out of their fancy duds pretty fast so he is only in them for a few hours-this works with DS. And you can always skip the restaurants on formal nights too.

He has lots of very nice buttondown shirts thanks to his DM and lots of nice khakis they are part of his work uniform(he works as an appliances sup for Best Buy).Maybe just buttondowns and a pair of clean,pressed khakis wouldn't be so bad,as long as it's 'ok'.
I am definately leaving the zoot suit at home unless they do a gangster night and then I"ll bring it AND my vintage 20's flapper dress with the little hat that really hugs my head.

From what I could tell on our cruise a week ago your husband will be fine as long as he's not in shorts or a swimsuit. Formal night ran the gamut from dockers and polos to a few tuxes with the majority somewhere in the middle. At our dinner at Palos in the evening my husband felt overdressed in a jacket and tie over his dockers. For brunch after I made a fuss about the suggested attire he finally caved and wore a shirt, tie and jacket but immediately went to the restroom to remove the tie when we were seated next to a fellow in shorts and a pullover shirt. It truly is just dress "guidelines" because DCL doesn't enforce much of anything.

Hmmm.That's funny...to me anyway.Why would they make 'guidelines' if they weren't going to be enforced(at least in some form)???
Even if he doesn't wear 'nice' clothes,I bet I could get DH to do his version of 'dress up' which is his nice,indigo jeans PRESSED with a buttondown and maybe a tie.

when in doubt -as I'm sure all men would concur-- you'll always be successful if you use sex to influence the husband to.......sharply dress up for cruise dining, ....rewallpaper the kitchen........detail the car.....landscape the sideyard......etc.... just a little tip from yer uncle Larry

Take Uncle Larry's advice promise your husband a Surail Bath. Tons of good old muddies fun with 45 minutes of privacy. HEE!!! HEE!!!! My husband will do anything for me if I promise him a Surail Bath.

I'm so glad that I read this thread. We are going on the 3 night cruise and my DH really doesn't have but one good jacket and the pants that it goes with are, should we say, a bit snug. I was thinking that we would have to go out and buy him a new suit. I know that he would much prefer to wear dockers and a polo shirt, but he also doesn't want to stick out like a sore thumb. Will he be alright at Triton's and Palo with just dockers and a polo shirt?

While I'm the first to stand up and say how saddened I am at the general lack of ANYBODY dressing up (or at least something other than jeans and a T-shirt) anymore, go with the flow and let DH do the same
Have sex all you want...do a Surial bath...but do these things cuz you want to, not to get hubby to lose the "blue jeans forever"motto!

I've been on two cruises, now, hardly an expert, but I never saw anyone turned away for dressing shabbily. They were treated with respect and had the waiter drop a napkin in their lap like they were royalty. Got to eat the same food as me and off of china, as well

Please don't let him wear "pressed" jeans with a shirt and tie... that's like a tux with sneakers. Just looks like your trying make fun, know what I mean?

What is this "Surail Bath" ? ...The wife and I do the UPS man / housewife (how can I pay for these c.o.d. charges); Maid/butler, Boss/secretary (can I get a promotion); Teacher/ student (can you give me extra credit?); Cinderella/Prince(see if this fits just right); Policeman/driver (do you have to give me a speeding ticket?); etc, etc. But the wife wanted me to ask: what is this "Surail Bath" and how/ where etc. ........................
