Stupid Question but have to ask....Security and Nook

Just got a Nook for Christmas. How do you take through security? Do you have to take battery off like laptop or do you just put in bin and go through? Should be simple answer and I feel silly asking but figure with all the travelers here someone could answer.

I just leave my Kindle in my carry on. Most times it goes through just fine. Once I had to take it out of its case and put it in a bin all by itself. But I never have had to take out a battery (don't even think you can) or turn it off and on for TSA.

FWIW, I have not ever had to take a battery off my laptop either. It just comes out of its case and goes through the xray machine in its own bin.

I'm sure the Nook will be the same as my Kindle and be no problem at all..

A Nook does not have to be taken out of a bag.

You don't take the battery out of a laptop for security.

I take my nook with me all the time. I take mine out of my bag and put it in a bin. In some airports they asked me to put it in the bin and some do not say anything. So just to be on the safe side I just put it in the bin. I also put it airplane mode once it is time to board. I forget that it is an electronic device...one of the flight attendants had to remind me to turn it off when we took off. You do not have to take the battery out, as another poster indicated though, my daughter never takes her battery out of her laptop

Agreeing with the other posters about laptops.
I have taken about 16 trips with a laptop and never had to remove the battery.

If anything, it's gone the other way for me: They used to make me turn my laptop on to show it really was a laptop.

I just left it in my purse, put my whole purse into the bin and didn't have any problems with it.

To be safe, I did turn it off, but it would have been nice to read since it seems to take for ever to get the okay to use electronic devices when you don't have anything to do but stare at the back of the seat in front of you.

I leave my Kindle in the bag, most security workers will tell you to leave it in the bag, no problem. Last time through MCO I left my laptop in its bag and nobody even mentioned it.

I have to chuckle about turning Kindles off for takeoff and landing as I know several pilots that use the larger Kindle DX for their approach charts (detailed maps/info of airport areas). Pretty sure they don't turn theirs off!

As always follow the directions of the crew, they are in charge, after all.

Unfortunately, the rule is that if it has an on/off switch, it needs to be off below 10,000 feet, not in airplane mode. Since take-off and landing are the times I'm most prone to motion sickness, and reading only increases the odds of me feeling queasy, I'm good with this rule. That said, if I'm feeling fine and want to occupy myself, I find the Sky Mall catalog in virtually ever seatback pocket is full of endless entertainment.

OMG! Thank you for posting this. My DH is positive that I'm the only person that ever reads it, and always rolls his eyes when I pull it out to occupy myself until I can turn my Kindle back on...

Flew on 12/17 and 12/31 and didn't take my Kindle out of my carry-on. We put the laptops in their own bins (never have taken batteries out).

I take my Kindle out and put it in the bin, only because the first time I flew with it, they did the test where they wipe it down. They didn't know what it was at that time. But that was a year ago, when they were fairly new items. I suppose now it would be better, but I just wanted to make it easy for them to see what it was.

Thanks! I couldn't figure out how to turn it off (was a gift from my in-laws and I left the instructions and box there on accident), so I wasn't sure if there was a true off option. Our flight is only 1.5 hrs, so I prob won't read on the flight, but I don't want to put it in my checked luggage.

In general I've been able to leave it in my bag. The one exception was MCO last February. I had been told to leave it in the bag when I was leaving NEW YORK (where you'd think security would be tougher), so left it in at MCO. Then had the person looking at the bags literally screech "Who left the DVD player in the bag??" I didn't respond because it was NOT a DVD player and didn't think she was talking to me. Until she held my backpack up and shook it. She proceeded to lecture me that it needed to come out of the bag and go through alone.

Coming home from Christmas, I just took it out - didn't want to cause a fuss.

That said, as long as it's in Airplane mode, I don't worry about turning it off. Never have, and it's never caused a problem. I just stick it in the seatback pocket until we're allowed to use them. I've heard from more than one pilot that it's really not a problem.
