Stupid Newbie Question

My husband and I have been running numbers and considering a purchase. This is going to sound like a really stupid question, but do the points required to stay at the different choices go up? I realize from looking at point calendars that different times of the year require different points (example 1 week in October is not the same as 1 week in December), but say in May of 2013 a one-week stay at OKW is 214 points, would that point requirement be higher the following year or does it stay the same?

I guess we're trying to figure out if we buy a set number of points (say 250) at one of the resorts we want to stay in, will there come a time when the 250 will no longer be enough and we'd have to purchase more points in order to keep doing the same thing?

Good question! :thumbsup2

If Disney adjusts the points for a resort up in one area, they have to adjust then down in another. The total for the year can not change.

1) pts cannot go up across the board at a resort. the number of pts for all the rooms in each resort for the entire year are legally required to stay the same through the expiration date of the contract.

2) within that total, pts can be reallocated. easter week will move around. weeknights can go up, if weekend nights come down. december pt costs can go up, if may pt costs go down. any reallocation will help some and annoy others...that's how it goes...

BLT appeared to go up across the board recently, but that is due to a reclassification of some high cost theme park view rooms to low cost standard view...but if you do a weighted average calculation, the total pts for BLT stayed the same.

Thanks so much for the explanations. We were hoping that was the case, because what would be the point in buying if they continued to go up like regular hotel rates.

Note that while the point cost to rent rooms will not go up (in aggregate), the per-point annual maintenance fee will. It's a matter of debate whether you should expect those fees to rise slower, the same, or faster than hotel rates.

The total number of points cannot change, but in the case of KV, JH, SSR and BLT, they did reclassify some of the villas to different categories. So some of them did go up and it looked like nothing else went down. But the number of villas in one category went up and the other category went down.
