Stupid Jack in the Box

Why, THANK YOU, bumbershoot. My faith in the intelligence of humanity has been restored!

Bumbershoot addressed several of the idiotic comments made that I might have responded to, and I thank her/him.

However:

To Brittsmum1998 who said: "You really think they "tricked" you into eating meat? Are you the Dahli Lama or something?" Why, yes. Yes I am the Dalai Lama. Are you Forrest Gump?

Did you really think that was a sincere, horrified, paranoid concern of mine? Clearly you do not understand irony, which was the whole point of the post. We asked about MEAT. THREE TIMES. We unknowingly bought meat. We were grossed out. We called and complained. They gave us free meat to apologize. God. The pretend response to corporate over the gift certificate was sarcasm.

Other points:
It is inaccurate to state that 90% or more of all fast food places use the same deep fryers for their meat and non-meat items. Surely, I cannot prove anything without sending Geraldo back there to blow the lid off that huge scandal (<--- sarcasm again), but the truth is that MANY FF places (not a lot. Not even 50%. I realize that.) now have designated certain fryers for meat, certain fryers for non-meat. JitB is one of these. And no, it's not out of concern for us fragile vegetarians that they do this.... they had complaints from lots of folks that the fries and onion rings were tasting like chicken and porky things. If I know for a fact that a fastfood place uses the same fryers for french fries and fried shrimp/fish/cow intestines or whatever, no. Would not order french fries there.

I also do not want to eat gelatin. I don't eat at McD's ever anyway, so that's no biggie. But to bumbershoot who said to ask your veg friends if they would eat yogurt if they KNEW it was made with gelatin and they said yes.... I agree totally. Vegetarians want NO PART of animal products in our food. It does not mean that I'm going to slash my wrists if I find out after the fact that my sister's Christmas fudge contained MARSHMALLOW CREAM. I'll never eat it again, but I don't have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder over it, either. Most vegetarians know that chewy, sticky, gooey fruit flavored candy (Starburst, Gummi Bears, Twizzlers, Skittles, all fruit snacks, etc) contain gelatin. No brainer.

Also, thanks for the tips to pack veggies for road trips.:thumbsup2 My GOD, I never thought of that! Geez.

I do love the comic relief from the poster who referenced My Big Fat Greek Wedding - "Okay, I'll make lamb, then." :laughing:That's what I'm talking about. It's dumb. It's ignorant. But it's funny!

Everybody calm the hell down. I did email Jack about the ridiculous attempt they made to right a wrong, and I expect nothing further from them.

Thank you.

I guess I'm confused as I would consider someone who doesn't eat yogurt vegan, not vegetarian. I've always heard vegetarian = no meat & vegan = no animal products at all. So a vegetarian would eat the yogurt but the vegan would not.

It's more like

Vegan: Nothing that comes from an animal (e.g. no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, honey)

Vegetarian: Nothing that requires the animal to be killed

Gelatin is animal bone marrow. It's not meat in the sense that it's not the muscle of the animal, but it definitely isn't vegetarian. Similarly a vegetarian wouldn't eat sweetbreads (Calf brains) or salmon skin, or other foods that aren't muscle but require you to kill the animal.

I assume she'd be happy with a coupon that can be used for mozzarella sticks, or a drink, or a "$2 off your next order" type deal. I think that something that costs whatever egg rolls cost would be fair.

Seems like a reasonable thing -- if they sell you something that isn't what they told you it was, they give you a replacement item.

Ever watch a JITB commercial? The irreverence is always there, why expect corporate to be any different? I believe the tongue in cheek response to be fitting, as there isn't much available on the menu the OP would order and there is such a thing as acceptable loss. The OP won't frequent JITB, so I don't believe that JITB is too worried about it. It appears the question of dropping the issue or not was decided before this thread was ever started.

Not sure I'd hold some kid at a fast food place responsible.
My daughter is vegetarian, and we've turned into label readers.
Some things you almost can't get vegetarian versions. like yogurt. They do make vegetarian Caesar Salad dressing, but how many people actually know that traditional Caesar Salad dressing has anchovies in it?
Almost every high end bakery item is made with lard.
Another thing we have to watch for is meat as a hidden ingredient way way way down on the list of products you would never expect to have meat in them.
Actually yogurt can be vegetarian id you are ovo=lacto vegetarian. There is also a soy yogurt that is dairy free and vegan. I don't expect to find that at fast food places though

Yet, you were outside with the dog and your boyfriend didn't check the ingredient list. Personal Responsibility would dictate that you would check the ingredient list yourself if this was a major concern.

I was always under the understanding that Spring Rolls may not contain meat, but Egg Rolls generally contain some sort of meat.

For somebody who says it is no big deal, you sure are making a big deal of it :goodvibes

From Jack-In-The-Box Ingredient List:

Egg Rolls Filling: Cabbage, Pork, Celery, Carrots, Textured Vegetable Protein Product (Textured Soy Flour, Zinc Oxide, Niacinamide, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Gluconate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate [B1], Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [B6], Riboflavin [B2], And Cyanocobalamin [B12]), Onions, Contains 1% or less of Salt, Sugar, Anchovy Flavored Fish Sauce (Anchovy Fish Extract, Salt, Sugar), Monosodium Glutamate, Spice; Crust: Enriched Bleached Flour, ([Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid], Calcium Propionate [Preservative]), Water, Enriched Durum Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Contains 1% or less of Salt, Cottonseed Oil, Dried Whole Eggs, Wheat Gluten. Fried in Cottonseed Oil. Cooked in All Vegetable Frying Oil. Contains Fish (Anchovy), Egg, Soy, Wheat. Contains Fish (Anchovy), Egg, Soy, Wheat

They most certainly are not safe for vegetarians. The McDonald's french fries contain natural beef flavoring. Since it is "natural", it is derived from beef, therefore, contains a meat substance.

from wikipedia:
Beef french fries

Lawsuits were brought against the McDonald's Corporation in the early 1990s for including beef in its French fries despite claims that the fries were vegetarian. In fact, beef flavoring is added to the fries during the production phase.[19] The case revolved around a 1990 McDonald’s press release stating that the company's French fries would be cooked in 100% vegetable oil and a 1993 letter to a customer that claimed their French fries are vegetarian.[20] McDonald's refuted this.[21] The lawsuits ended in 2002 when McDonald's announced it would issue another apology and pay 10 million dollars to vegetarians and religious groups. Subsequent oversight by the courts was required to ensure that the money that was paid by McDonald's: "to use the funds for programs serving the interests of people following vegetarian dietary practices in the broadest sense." There was some controversy in this ruling, as it benefited non-vegetarian groups such as Muslims, who cannot eat McDonald's fries as they are non-halal (haraam), and research institutions that research vegetarian diets but do not benefit vegetarians. In 2005, the appeal filed by vegetarians against the list of recipients in this case was denied, and the recipients of the 10 million dollars chosen by McDonald's was upheld.

Further ingredient-related lawsuits have been brought against McDonald's since 2006. McDonald's had included its French fries on its website in a list of gluten-free products; these lawsuits claim children suffered severe intestinal damage as a result of unpublicized changes to McDonald's French fry recipe. McDonald's has provided a more complete ingredient list for its french fries more recently. Over 20 lawsuits have been brought against McDonald's regarding this issue, which the McDonald's Corporation has attempted to consolidate.

French Fries:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid
pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to
preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK *(Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

Yes, I do remember this controversy. McD's used the "now fried in vegetable oil" as a marketing point, but it backfired because it implied they were vegetarian.

This is also from their site: None of our products is certified as vegetarian. This information is correct as of May 2011, unless stated otherwise.

Unless something is certified vegetarian OR made by you personally, you can NOT 100% expect for it to be safe. That is where personal responsibility comes in. If not eating meat is something one decides they want to do, then they have to make changes in how and where they eat. This includes asking to SEE the ingredient list instead of trusting what people say.

As others have said...personal responsibility. It's a novel concept that seems to be lost.

Jack-in- the box should respond that they list the ingredients for all their products. If you have an allergy or other dietary restriction it is YOUR responsibility to check to make sure something is safe and not rely on what others say.

I quoted from the food brochure of McDonalds Canada there is no natural beef flavouring in Canada's mcdonalds french fry ingredient list of the Canadian brochure . as I supplied in an earlier post. So all you vegetarians Canada french fries = safe, not Americann ones.

The Whopper is from Burger King? o.O

You're right, I just didn't finish typing what I was thinking.........
I did work at JITB and was thinking she could do the same thing my friend did at Burger King who ordered the whopper, no meat extra cheese but order the equivalent type of sandwich at Jack in the Box. Sorry I wasn't clear.

I didn't read everything, but I would just drop it. I would have called the manager to let them know what happened, but only because an employee shouldn't just take a guess when answering a question like that. People ask questions because they are allergic to things and I'd hate to see someone mislead by an employee.

I think even a fast-food employee should know if there's chicken in a specific dish sold by their employer. It's not some impossible-to-pronounce, twelfth-on-a-list ingredient. It's chicken for heaven's sake, and the employee was obviously wrong and mislead the customer.

I'm an omnivore with several friends and family members who are vegetarians or vegans, and I'm often surprised that other omnivores seem to have a lot of animosity toward those who choose not to eat meat or animal products.
