Stupid Jack in the Box

My boyfriend and I stopped at a Jack in the Box on the highway between Houston and San Antonio. We are strict vegetarians and have been for over 20 years. I told the bf to get the stuffed jalapenos and mozzarella sticks (gross, I know, but we were desperate). I stayed with the dog outside while he ordered. He noticed a sampler trio thing that also included egg rolls so he asked the cashier what was in the eggrolls. She said she didn't know. He asked her if there was MEAT in them and she said "Oh, no.". He said "So they are vegetarian?" and she confirmed. Well, guess what. I bit into one and it was disgusting mushy meat. Barf. I instantly called the restaurant (we were back on the road by then) and spoke to a manager who just kept telling me that the eggrolls have pork and chicken in them. Whatever. I called their corporate customer service number the next day and told the person there the whole story and she was totally apologetic and nice and took down a detailed report and said she would send me something in the mail to hopefully express how sorry they were. I got it today. A coupon for ONE Jack in the Box combo meal. The irony? There is not one single vegetarian combo meal at Jack in the Crack. The apology is heartwarming: "We're so sorry we tricked you into eating meat! Here. Here's a gift certificate for some meat.". :sad2::sad2::sad2: Would you just drop it at this point?

I have zero sympathy for a vegetarian that wants to stop at a fast food joint and expects to get a vegetarian meal.

BTW,

Jack in the Box rules and I love meat. :)

Yes, I would drop it.

Honestly, if there was nothing up on the menu that said-Vegetarian, I can't truly count on the staff--to really know. cause either 2 things will happen: they say they do know so you will buy, or they will say they don't know and not ask anyone if it does.

P.S. that is a crazy cute picture of your dog with the milkbone on the nose.

I miss having JIB here, they were here years ago. the last time I went to one was 4 years ago in Hawaii. i loved their shakes.

What were you expecting? It's Jack in the box. Yeah, I'd drop it. - Seriously, how much time do you want to invest in this?

Yeah, I'd drop it. What else are they going to do? I mean, they must know they don't have vegetarian items so they can't possibly be worried about losing your business.

If you still have your receipt, I suppose you could try writing to their corporate office and ask for a refund... but in all honesty, I don't think they're going to care that much. They know that you aren't going to be a regular customer.

I'm not excusing anyone's behavior, but I really don't think it's worth any more effort on your part. What do you WANT them to do for you?

I would definitely drop it. Don't see any reason to exert the energy to pursue it further.

Really. Being vegetarian does not mean eating 100% natural, organic, soybean based, granola covered, gluten free, sugar free, preservative free, pesticide free wheat germ flax seed quinoa seitan tofu meals 100% of the time. It means we don't eat meat. Good grief, we do eat fast food once in awhile. And we weren't looking for a vegetarian meal, we were looking for vegetarian sides- most fast food joints do have those. Guess what? We drink diet Pepsi, too. ::gasp::

For everyone else, yeah, I think I'll just drop it. It's annoying, but not worth wasting any more energy on it.

I've been a vegetarian for 22 years and I say I'd drop it. This happens to me all of the time - typically I'm told that the soup is vegetarian (but it ends up being made with chicken broth) or that the salad is meatless (but has bacon bits). Just last week I asked if a pasta salad was vegetarian and one bite told me it had Caeser dressing (most certainly not veg!).

It's part of the challange of living as a minority in the mostly omnivorous world.

We live and we learn. But I know that 95% of fast food places are going to fry anything you order from them that is not a salad in the same oil they fry their meat products, so I never eat fast food. Even the yougurt at McDonalds isn't vegetarian!

So, let it go and just never eat there again.

I would be so tempted to send it back and suggest they save the coupon for a Jack in the Box customer but I probably wouldn't go to the trouble.

Ugh, that's not fun. Though I'm not vegetarian, I can understand the frustration you must of felt. Not being mean or anything, but when you said what they sent you, I did this. :lmao: Just because of the irony of it. You can tell that the person answering your complaint wasn't using their brain.

At this point, I would just drop it. I don't think it's really worth the time you would have to put into it. At most, drop them an email telling then that they might want to rethink their response next time.

Then I would just give the gift certificate to a friend, a family memeber or even a stranger on the street. Might as well brighten someone elses day with their misplaced apology.

If I had food restrictions I wouldn't rely on a fast food workers word on what was in a product. I'd ask to see an ingredient list if that were possible or just stick with the things I knew I could have.

OP, sorry that this happened but the response from Jack In The Box appears to stay right in line with the company's advertising.

To be fair, the egg rolls were vegetarian until not too long ago, when they switched to chicken, hence the cashier might have had reason to believe they had no meat.

That said, I'd drop it. Especially considering the menu board says chicken egg rolls.

I would drop it. I don't see how a mistake like this is worth this much fuss.

As someone with medically necessary food restrictions, I can sympathize. On our recent road trip to Disneyland I faced some fast food challenges, too. I hope that you can get to where you are able to move on. I'm sorry this happened to you.

If I were the customer service rep, I would have had trouble taking you seriously, since they don't certify either the sticks or the poppers as vegetarian.

I can appreciate it if you don't mind eating a little meat, or don't mind if its only used in cooking, like the poppers and the sticks you ordered. Since you already ordered a meat including product, its a tough sell that you're concerned about eating additional meat.
