That depends. How are you doing the highlights? What color is your hair? Is it natural? What color is the box? The box color if it doesn't specifically say highlights will be a single process color. Usually, not always highlights are double process lifted then colored (toned down) after with a single process dye.

If you have dark hair and don't get enough lift from the box you could end up locked with orange or brassy gold highlights.

Basically, I wouldn't do it.

I have light brown hair, formally dyed red, but its back to brown. I was thinking of dyeing it but got the offer of highlights since my aunt wants to do her kids hair but wants a test dummy (aka, the good neice). So whats the differance between single and double process? I remember the last time I highlighted just combing it in with a triangluar tool and letting it sit on till it was time to take it off.

So your hair is not considered natural right now. That makes things even more complicated. You could have very undesirable results.

Do a test strand if your determined to do it anyway.

Highlight kits usually contain bleach. Maybe like the one you used prior that you just painted on.

so just another odd question, what if i dye my hair red again then wait 12 days (thats when the kids come home) and highlight it? can I do that? I dont wanna totally trash my hair!

That would actually make things worse! Do you want to be a red head with highlights or a brunette with highlights? And, what color highlights are you looking for? Blonde? Also remember, you will have roots due to the original color as well as the highlights growing out if you do this.

You have to be more clear on what you bought. Did you buy color, or did you buy bleach?

Color cannot color hair, with color on it. *color cannot color, color*

What did you buy? What do you have now? And what do you want?

I bought colorsilk beutiful color by revlon strawberry blonde which is the color I normally dye my hair which I do every 8 weeks or so, since I have really slow growing hair.
As far as base color before highlighting, I dont really care if im red or brunette.
If my hairs brunette, I was going to go with red highlights since I do have natural red highlihgts (but only in the summer)
If I go red, Im not sure what highlight color I would do.

I guess right now I just need advice, I dont wanna look horible.

I'm sorry - I'm not understanding, I don't think. Is this color you bought, to color your whole head? Or highlights?

We have to go back to color cannot color, color - or better yet - color cannot LIFT color(ed hair). Lift meaning "make lighter".

So - first and foremost - if you have color on your hair, no matter what "blonde" you choose, if it's only color, it will not lift to a blonde. ONLY bleach can lift. The box color will only lift your growth, which will leave you with blonde roots, and whatever color the rest of your hair is, now.

If you want highlights, you need to get a highlighting kit - or similar.

Does that make sense?

Alright, I read again - if your hair is this Strawberry blonde, already - and thats what you bought, what would you be highlighting? Your hair is already that color. :confused3

She has natural brown hair dyed reddish blonde then dyed brown again.

OP=think of it this way

Color an area on paper brown

Now take out a yellow crayon and draw some stripes-do you see them?
No, you cant
You cant use blond color over brown color and expect highlights:)

Hey now! my hairs all one color!:rotfl: Its brown soon to be highlighted with the kit im gonna run to walmart and buy.

Yeah - you're gonna have to do that. You can't lift with color alone.

Either return the color you bought, or save it and color the hair you bleach out the color from.

P.S. - Go through the orange stage! Don't be afraid. People panic, and see their hair going orange and take off the bleach too soon. After orange is yellow, and just get yourself to a pale "inside of a banana peel" blonde. :)

lol

After working today from 9a-8p, this thread was quite amusing. Thanks for the visual, phorsenuf. :)

CathrynRose thanks for the orange advice. the last time I got blond highlights I was umm a little drunk and dont remember waiting for it to change.
Im keeping the hairdye incase my aunt totally screws up. I know walmart sells hairdye remover I should be ok.

This is the best laugh I have had all day. Thank you. :rotfl::rotfl2:

As far as coloring and highlighting my own hair, I did it myself once with disastrous results and vowed never again. I let a professional do it and it turns out great every time.
