Stupid Guest Impact?

So, a few months, or maybe just weeks ago, there was a post about a stupid guest who somehow managed to get out of the restraint on Soarin and stood just outside the ride area while the ride was in motion. The powers that be actually shut down Soarin, on both coasts, to react to the incident.

So, this week, we were at DL and CA, and I noticed, on everyride that had a buckle, such as ToT, ST, Soarin, Indy and others, after they had the electronic confirmation that all the seats were buckled, they had everyone, row by row, physically pull on the yellow strap.

Never enountered this at Disney before and I'm wondering if this was due to the Soarin incident?

I thought the CMs always went around and checked seat belts or lap bars. And they would also buckle or move the lap bars on the empty seats.

I noticed it at WDW last year. So they may have started to more carefully enforce a policy that was already in place.

When I visited in Dec 2010 and again in May 2012 all rides that had that type of belt we had to raise our arms and "tug on the yellow strap".

So I am not thinking this is something new.

On any ride that has a seat belt, I have ALWAYS been asked to pull on the yellow strap at both WDW and DL years before the soarin issue. This is nothing new and is standard for all Disney rides with seat belts and always has been (at least for the past 10-15 years).

They have always asked guests to tug on the yellow tag to check the belt is secure, but I have also read about the incident you mention.

The article said (dated early May) - & I really don't know if this is true - that a man & his daughter somwhow managed to release their seat belts after the safety check just as the ride was beginning - the CM immediately stopped the ride & they closed Soarin' down on both coasts to examine the safety procedures.

According to the article they have changed security camera angles and in addition, will be redesigning adjusting the centre straps so adults as well as small children will have to use them. (Again, this is only anecdotal and I don't know if it's true).

Everytime we have been on rides with this type of seat belt, they have always had us do the pull the yellow strap test.

As for idiotic guests messing up the rides for the rest of us story.....

We were in WDW in 2008, first time for my kids on splash mtn, since when I took them in 2005 in DL it was down for refub so they had never been on it, and right when we were about to go up the incline for the big drop, in the boat in front of us a teenage girl threw her purse out onto the ledge, and jumped out onto the side section. Of course the whole ride came to a stop, lights went on, loud speaker blaring "DO NOT MOVE A CAST MEMBER WILL BE THERE SHORTLY"

She was standing right at the stop where the stairs begin that would be used to evacuate guests if the ride breaks down an you are stuck at the incline.

Needless to say, there was alot of booing, and alot of "If the ride was too much for you, you should not have gotten on"

Now, I get that she might have been nervous, however, in the line there are many signs telling you that the drop is intense, and you have more then one opportunity to exit the line at WDW.

Why guests insist on doing things that either they are not prepared for, or allow themselves to be talked into doing when they do not want to do it, is beyond me.

After waiting in the standby line for an hour, then having the ride not ruined per say, but, the flow was interupted, was not how I wanted my kids to experiance splash mtn. So thanks young lady, we still discuss your bad decision making when we go on splash mtn to this day

To me, hopping out of a moving ride would be far scarier. Wow.

I would have thought so too, but that tells me just how scared she was. Which again, why even go on the darn thing if you are that scared that you would jump out of a moving (granted really slow moving at that point in the ride) log.

At first when we watched it, it was like "did I just see what I think I just saw?" and yup, I did

I wonder if this is why they installed the lap bars on WDW splash? Did that happen often enough that they needed to make sure you could not jump out?

Either way, like I said we still talk about bad decision making regarding DL when we get in line for splash.

On Star Tours in March a young man (about 20) was sitting in the row behind us. His seat belt would not move (so he couldn't pull it across him to latch it) and he sat there struggling with it. He tried to get the CMs attention while she was doing the seat belt check, but was not successful (if I had been him, I think I would have stood up) and somehow (the lights that indicated that everyone was belted in must have been malfunctioning as well), he ended up riding through the entire ride (including Hoth) without a seat belt. I felt certain he was going to fly right onto my daughter who was sitting in front of him, but he managed to stay in his seat for the whole flight.

I noticed on Soarin' in May (the one time we rode it that trip), there was some sort of problem and we ended up having to do the seat belt check twice and waiting about 10 minutes before the ride started. The strap between the legs does actually work for adults, my mom has a bit of a fear of heights and uses it every time.

Yeah this is not new at all. I've gotten so used to it that as soon as I get in and buckle in I put my hands up and pull on it lol. They have been doing this for tons of years

Here in Sweden where I live at Liseberg park they have a simular log ride and a woman in a panic jumped out just before the log went down the hill. She slipped and dangled in the water for a bit, hanging on then fell down the shoot and her log came down after her, striking and killing her. Can you believe it?
I feel bad for her because I have tried to ride Soarin, I really want to ride and I'm normally not afraid but something about the seating and how you feel so free with just the belt gives me a panic attack. I've had to call, loudly, for the CM to release me twice . I experienced some pressure to ride from those I was with so I tried and thought I could overcome the panic of it, but in the end there was no way. Of course I would never try to get out myself from any ride if it were in motion or about to go up like on Soarin!

A couple of years ago my DD and I were on Spaceship Earth at EPCOT. We got about half way up the incline when the woman in font of us panicked and jumped out of the car. Because it was so dark and she panicked, she fell down the evacuation stairs head over heels. They stopped the ride for about 10 minutes before starting it up again. I'm not sure what happened to the woman, but that was the scariest experience I've ever had at any park.

this is not new, this is SOP for DL/DCA and has been on every trip I've ever taken there. If they don't do this in WDW I'm not sure I'd want to go!

I thought Soarin' would scare the bejeebers out of me but it doesn't, it's one of my favorite rides actually. I don't use the strap between the legs but I love to ride in the middle row, because I can see people around me it helps with my fear of heights. I hope someday you are able to ride it!

I'm having thoughts of a malfunctioning seatbelt and/or idiot deciding not to wear a seat belt on ToT..... ::shudders::
