Stunned Silence, how would have handled this?

We're going in August for 8 nights to WDW  There are 6 of us; so we needed either 2 rooms or a Home away. Well, after a lot of debating it, my DH and I decided on 2 rooms at POP. He has never been to the world and neither have his children. This makes the trip all the more exciting for my kids and myself.

While talking to a "friend" last night about the trip I told her where we were staying, her response: Well if you have to be so cheap about going to disney why bother to go at all? Just wait till you can afford it. I had no clue how to answer that, I actaully sat there in stunned silence.

Our reason for the POP is I know we're never in the room except to sleep, so with that being said we decided to book the less expensive room and use the money for really nice meals and spoil the 4 kids rotten on this vacation. Also when we were married in January we didn't take a honeymoon and want to do a few extra special things while down there, like V & A without the kids. I didn't even bother to justify our reason to her, I just changed the subject.

What would you have done?

Smacked her.

Just kidding.

I think I would have told her that Disney makes the trip wonderful at all income levels. Why should you NOT go? Just because it's not a Deluxe resort? I mean for heavens sake, you're not going because it's a spa. Your going to Walt Disny WORLD!!! You're going to sleep in your room and swim at the pool. Then you'll be at the parks. Who on earth cares where you're sleeping when you're zipping around on Test Track???

Holycow!!!!!! some people just know how to open mouth and insert the foot don't they!

You know I know you were "stunned" to silence (which btw I would have been too!) but it probably was just the right response!

When you're family comes home and you tell her what a marvelous time you've had that will be her answer!

Take care
Holycow

I would have responded exactly how you explained it about never being in the room, etc. I would also possibly have said that for the amount of people, that is the best solution.

What is it her business, anyway, where you stay? How often has this person vacationed at WDW and where does she stay? Sorry you had to have such a negative response.

What nerve! I don't think staying is a value resort is being cheap! I stayed at the All Star Sports because I couldn't see myself paying alot of money for a room I was hardly in! I think what you are doing is smart...with the money you are saving on the room you will be able to treat your children more to the nice meals and some of the souvenirs they would want. Plus, why wouldn't you want to stay at the brand new resort?

Have fun on trip!

Stunned silence was the correct response. I would probably have told her that it was the rudest comment she has made to date. I will bet she makes a habit of rude comments.

Geez...... She must think that people who stay OFF-SITE are Ghetto-trash.
That's ridiculous.

I probably would have said something to this effect.....

Well, that's a really tacky thing to say. I don't think it really matters where we stay since we won't be in the room much. And I don't see the point in wasting money on things that aren't important to us like other people do.

Then change the subject and let her mull that over for a while. Of course, at the very moment, I probably would have been stunned just like you and only thought of a 1,000 great things I SHOULD have said AFTER we hung up!

pw2pp -- We weren't talking about OFF-SITE. Of course those people ARE ghetto-trash and I'm surprised Disney lets them in the parks! :rotfl: :p :rotfl:

That is extremely rude you told her your plans no matter what she thinks she should have kept her mouth shut. Can't understand why a "friend" would make a comment like that.
She is entitled to her opinion, But you didn't ask for it.

Oh my goodness! I agree! VERY Rude!!!

I think you made a great decision with POP! Heard so many wonderful things! With 2 rooms, you'll have plenty of room to spread out, 2 bathrooms, & 2 TV's!

Don't let her "get" to you. I'v found that the people who have to "flaunt" are generally the ones with nothing in the bank......

Enjoy your trip!! Don't forget to visit Tylers (CM at POP) thread on the resorts brd!

What would you have done? [/B]

I would have said that is a really rude thing to say to me and don't appreciate it.

I don't know about you, but, I don't think any WDW vacation is "cheap".... even if you stay off-site, it can still be expensive.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it, I probably would have reacted the same way. Maybe she is jealous.

WOW I am just amazed someone made that comment. She must not be as Disney crazed as we all are. I probably would have sat there in silence also for a few minutes shocked and then explained your reasoning on why you are staying there. I am with you, why pay for a deluxe resort if you aren't going to use it but to sleep. Personally I would save my money and use it for souveneirs!!!!

Silence often speaks louder than words!

I hope you have a wonderful trip and great belated honeymoon.

"Well, if that's your attitude then I am going to rethink inviting you along." ;)

I work for an oral surgeon and just last week I told the doctor that we could charge a lot of money to do "foot from mouth" extractions;) . I see an awful lot of people who need them badly! Sounds like you need to send that person to us :p .

I think stunned silence was the perfect reply...
that would have been my reaction!

Was she serious? Oh my goodness. I don't consider any trip to Disney World to be exactly cheap no matter where we stay. Some resorts may be cheaper than others but in my opinion it ends up being pretty darn expensive no matter what you do. That being said, I would have been speechless as well. I never can think of anything clever to say until well after the fact. I would hate to think of what her opinion would be if she knew what we pay at the SOG. In that case I guess we shouldn't go to Disney World either, hee hee.
