I know the studios don't have in room washer/dryers. Are the public washers free? If not, how much are they? We are stating at SSR and AKV next month. Thanks!

The washer and dryers are free. You can purchase detergent and dryer sheets there or bring your own. I bring my own (Tide Pods and dryer sheets.) They don't take up much room in the luggage.

If you are at Jambo House they are near the bridge. I had to ask at least 5 people to find them. Everyone kept directing me to the hotel washing room not the DVC washing room.
That will depend on whether or not others are using the machines. The only time I haven't had to wait for a washing machine when we stayed in a studio was when I got up at 5:30 or 6AM and did my laundry then. If you try to do it when everyone else is at the pool, you might be waiting.
Please make sure you remove your laundry promptly after the last cycle finishes to leave it available for the next guest. Some people aren't so nice. They put in a load and don't come back for hours.
The main laundry at SSR is near Community Hall at the Springs and the main feature pool. There is another small one at the Congress Park quiet pool so you can hang out at the pool while doing your laundry. Very convenient. If there are others I'm sure someone will chime in.
They are free. In Resorts having both hotel and DVC rooms, there may be two different laundry rooms, one for hotel guests (with paid machines) and on for DVC members (free).
At the VGC, the laundry room is only one and with paid machines, however you can go to the concierge and ask for free tokens. They'll ask you the DVC members card and maybe an ID.
If you are not prompt in returning, another person may take your things out of the washer/dryer and put them on the table. I've seen that done, but have not done it. I usually wait in the laundry room for my things to get done.

If you are waiting for a washer or dryer and another guest hasn't returned to remove their stuff from the machine, you should have no problem removing it for them and dumping it on the table close by. Or on top of the machine if they didn't leave a laundry basket. Just give them a few minutes to return to the machine, say 15 minutes. Then it's yours.
We just stayed at Kidani last week. There were 3 washers and 6 dryers. One washer broke while I was there. There was a long wait in the evenings. I ended up going down at 6:30am. To be honest, while free it was a pain due to the waiting. They definitely could use more.
