When we joined
DVC, our intention was to stay in 1BR's with our family of 4. For us, the whole point was to be able to affordably stay in the "vacation homes", which for me, do not include studios. Our introduction to DVC was a full-price CRO trip in a 2BR at OKW for 7 nights with my parents in 2001. That was when I decided that single-room accommodations would simply not satisfy me anymore

.
Fast forward to 2008....I had rented a reservation in a savanna-view studio for 6 nights at AKV-Jambo. Because it was my second cash-trip that year, I could not afford a 1BR. It was me and my friend along with my DD's, ages 3 and 5 at the time. DH and I had just closed on our own 100-pt resale at AKV and I was dying to check it out. After that stay, I was even more indecisive. The studio was more than adequate, even with the small kids. So, I started the same "do we go more/longer in studios, or less and stay in 1BR's" debate.
Here's the compromise I've settled on...
We start our trip in a studio for 1-2 nights. We pack for those nights in our carryon so we do not need to do a lot of unpacking. We also add a dining plan for those nights so that we do not need to cook in the room. Then, for our last 3-4 nights, we move to a 1BR within the same resort. On "switch" day, one of us drops the luggage at Bell Services while the other one checks in to the other room. Then we head out to the park for the day. When we return, we grab our luggage and head up to our new room. It is very easy to do and a great way to both stretch our points and still enjoy the benefits of a 1BR. By day 3, we are ready to do some laundry and relax a little more in the room.
A lot of folks find a split-stay to be a hassle and prefer to stay put. In a perfect world, I would love to stay in a 1BR for 5 nights every trip. Unfortunately, that would mean fewer trips than I would like so for me, the split-stay is the price I pay to go more often.
