schools do have a right do to do these things. Myspace and facebook are NOT private. Anyone can see them. I know it seems like they are invading privacy but if you want it private, don't put it on the internet. Also, schools can enforce policies if the students signed a contract for activities. In high school I would have lost my captain status on a sports team, I would have been suspended from the team and had detention for the school if caught using ANY substance that was illegal for me to have (yes that includes tobacco on school grounds if you were under 18).

My college police has been alerted to events on facebook that are obvious for underage drinking and will notify the event creators that if underage drinking will occur then the police will be checking in to enforce policy.

In the end, if you drink, don't be surprised if those pictures could hurt you in the future. I had friends lose internships because of their pictures on facebook making them look unresponsible to potential employers.

We had an incident with Facebook last year that resulted in 2 kids getting expelled.

Apparantly these 2 guys made a few comments about a teacher, and somehow one of the teachers from our school snuk into their private group and read the comments. The teacher misread the comments and thought the guys were threatening the teacher, so it was reported and the 2 guys ended up being expelled.

Personally, I think it was extremely ridiculous that these 2 guys (One happens to be a friend of mine) who were having a private conversation were expelled because a teacher was snooping around their private group. My English teacher today was saying that teachers are told to avoid Facebook, so why they were even on in the first place is just ridiculous.

I think that the school is doing the right thing by punishing their students. It is illegal. They could go to jail. Their parents should be into the problem too. The parents are the ones who let them go off and drink even when they probably didn't know. They should go to court, and stand up and tell the story face-to-face with a judge. Well, I think it really has nothing to do about the school, unless they got arrested. Where I live if they get arrested then they get in trouble at school also. But if a teacher or someone saw the students, drinking/smoking/getting high, I dont think they could do anything about it. They probably have saw some students smoking/drinking before.

Something like this just happened at my school recently. The same thing, a girl had a New Years Eve party and some kids snuk in boose and pictures were posted online and they got in trouble. Whats even worse....the girl who had the party, was the daughter of a teacher at my school! and it was at the teachers house! So, not only did the girl and her friends get in trouble, but now the teachers job is in danger.

I kinda do think that this is over stepping the boundries of the school. But I also think that if someone is dumb enough to post pictures of themselves doing something that they clearly are not supposed to be doing, then they should get in trouble.

-10 YEARS??? Wow if they would see our pictures,of the people I know, my entire high school, would be going for 10 years! If this is the first time they were caught they should at least be given a warning, and know not to put that kind of photos on the internet for anyone to see them.

-this is not the parents fault. teens are very rebellious i should know i am one=] but the parents cannot be blamed for every thing their child messes up on. sometimes the children have to take the consiquences and get over it.

AND... unless the pictures, were taken on school grounds then the schools cant do anything!

So the kids get 10 years and parents get nothing...no if every underage teen got sent away for 10 years do you know how upset parents would be?? To miss out of 10 years in a young persons life is ridiculous. Especially if pictures are the only "evidence." What if someone was just at the party and not drinking?? How do they know? How does the school know what was in those infamous red cups? Ugh, they just dont.

I know a lot of people already quoted you but I had to comment.
There probably is not a college student out there who hasn't had a drink before. 10 years in jail? You need to brush up on your law enforcement knowledge. I'm not a genius when it comes to law enforcement either, but there are people who get away with murder and you think an underage drinker should be put away for 10 years?

I think the school was out of line. Yes it is illegal, but the cops should have to take care of that. Not the school. If they were on school grounds, it would be a whole different story, but if they weren't, let the cops deal with it. If the cops arrested every underage drinker the whole lowerclassmen (freshman, sophmores, ect) campus would be practically empty. I don't even know how they found the pictures on a site as big as Facebook.

The students should be more careful next time and not post pictures like that online.

On another note: I'll make sure never to use a red cup again. That’s just ridiculous. It could've been water! Or coke. I mean come on it sounds like they were just looking for people to discipline.

I know this has already been quoted, but they were just drinking! Sure, they shouldn't really be doing it, but in some countries the drinking age is 16, and that's just the age where they can drink unaccompanied by a parent, before hand they may drink as long as a parent is with them.

Most people have had a drink before they turned 21. If everyone who has had a sip of alcohol before they turned 21 was to be given 10 years in prison, the prisons would be full.

sorry about that. I went a little overboard with the years in jail. I still think they should be in jail though. I am just only in the 7th grade. Sometimes I think wrong.
