Basically that article is about some HS kids who posted pics of them drinking underage on Facebook, and the school's administrators saw them, so the kids got in trouble.

What do you guys think of that?
Is the school overstepping it's boundaries becaue none of that happened on school property or during school hours?
Should the parents be the ones dealing with it rather than the school?
Or do you think the school did the right thing by punishing the students?

Do you guys think that people who post pics of them drinking underage on the internet should get busted? Or is it an invasion of privacy?

ETA:
students are getting longer suspensions from activities -- up to five weeks -- if they appeared in multiple photos. The evidence in some cases was also dubious, they said, noting that pictures of students holding a red cup were enough to merit a call to the dean's office.

Wow This is hard for me

I think its pretty ridiculus that the school would do such a thing

if i were in charge of that school i would say...

Notify their parents
Give the kids a really boring lecture on how "underaged drinkng is bad" (im not being sarcastic it IS bad)

but thats all i would do

I wouldnt do any more its really none of my buisness

I would rather that it was the police or other kind of enforcement. The school shouldn't be able to punish you outside of school. They should only punish students for the misbehavior on the internet if the pictures (or story, something) happened AT the school.

Like last year a couple kids in my grade made videos kinda making fun of a ******** student and they filmed at the school. So the kids parent contacted school administration. But school administration shouldn't be able to punish students about underage drinking unless it's happening at the school.

All I can say to them is "here's your sign!"
It somewhat invades personal privacy, but nonetheless, it's illegal

I don't really know.
I'm amazed it's taken this long though..

wow.

I think thats really harsh!
Just cause someone is at a party where their is alcohol doesnt mean they're drinking it! (I usually don't!)

People need to be more aware of what people can see about them online, and who they are 'friends' with.

I got told that as soon as a start my teaching degree, i have to ether A) get rid of my facebook all together or B) take off the front picture, and make ALL my settings friends only. Its also a good habit to be in for job interviews, where they might check your facebook. Un tag all those really bad photos, and make sure they cant see ur profile.

Also be really careful what you say online. My old company had a policy that said if you say anythign bad about the company on the internet you will be fired. So it is a good warning for later life!

I'll be sure to never hold a red cup then. ;)

I agree with Damhsa. What done at school, is school business, what done out of school, is not the schools business. But it is the police's business. :)

I have a few of my old HS teachers on facebook (lol...i know. weird.) anyways, I have them on like super-limited profile, and I'm sure it's likewise for me.

But I think it is totally bogus that people can creep your information regarding jobs & stuff.
and that is why my facebook is super private hehe.

Kids under 21 shouldn't drink. Many adults over 21 shouldn't drink. Invasion of privacy aside, what the kids did was illegal, and therefore there should be consequences. Doesn't matter who carries out said consequences. IMO these kids are lucky that it's just their school who punished them.

One, why was the school searching face book photos?

Two, only your friends on facebook can see your photos, who would post pictures like that knowing that their teachers could see them?

Three, if you're doing something illegal, why take photos?

Four, parents should parent. not school systems.

First of all, they are just plain stupid to posting those types of pictures publicly. If you are underage and you are posting pictures of you doing something illegally, you should really make it private.

Second, the school had no right to punish them for that based on their Facebook pictures. The school was in no way affiliated with those actions since they didn't occur on school property, or on school grounds, so they should have stayed out of it.

I know some of my friends on Facebook have pictures of them with actual cans of beer and other alcohol. I know better than to post those types of pictures (not that I even do it.) I always censor whatever I put on there. I'm set to private, but I still don't put any pictures that might even suggest that I'm doing something illegal on there. I don't want people to see me in that way.

My friend is an Education minor, and on the first day of my Ed Pysch class this past semester, the teacher showed a power point that had pictures of kids in the class drinking/partying (the faces were blurred), and told them to take those pictures/untag themselves immediately, as they could eventually come back to haunt them when they are searching for a teaching job.

Anywho, for the being punished thing, I don't believe that's fair. Sure, if the picture clearly was taken, say, on school grounds or at a school activity (like a dance), then I think the school has a right to punish them. But if it's at the student's house, they have no right. A school can not dictate the activities of its students when they are not in school/on campus/at an activity.

ooo if teachers saw the kind of pictures that girls from my school were taking there would be some issues! Not only underage drinking, but "inapropriate" pictures, put it that way!

Yet they always tell you that they can't do anything about what goes on outside of school:rolleyes:

The school was completely out of line. I've talked to my R.A.s in college and since kids post pictures of themselves drinking in their rooms (which isnt allowed) I asked them what they do when they see those pictures. They aren't allowed to go looking for trouble. As far as I'm concerned they weren't hurting anyone directly on campus so the school is completely out of line.

In all the schools I've ever been enrolled in, I never read a rule that forbid drinking OFF of the school campus. I could see administration looking through their school's network out of curiosity, but I'm kinda surprised they went so far as to punish the kids. Isn't that what cops are for?

yea, i dont think thats right... it didnt happen during school, or on school grounds.. imo, its just not the schools place to punish them.. and i guess schools are cracking down on facebook and myspace now.. just seems like an invasion of privacy to me... ah well... thats why i have everythign set on private lol

That's what I was trying to say but I couldn't figure out how to word it.

There is no doubt the school was out of line. Now if these students had been looking on their Facebook pages on the schools computers it would have been a different story.

How did the school even find these pictures? You cant get to basically anything on my page unless your my "friend." Maybe I just have a different setting??

I am in the performing arts and in one year will be applying to college. In a class I took last year our teacher told us to take any incriminating photos of us either down or un-tag ourselves. Because once our name is even slightly public, people will be looking for ways to get us in trouble. Now I use a stage-name but I heard horror stories of potential Universities using Facebook and Myspace as a way of deciding between one student or another.

I know one friend from another school who took all her pictures with drinking involved and burred out any red cup or anything else that could get her in trouble. Seems a little underhanded, but if you are that attached to your photos, that seems like a simple solution.

I still dont understand how the school got into all these kids facebooks??

idk its weird. so many people from my school have drinking pictures on their myspaces and facebooks, and everyone goes on facebook during school, and teachers dont do anything. i think even one of my teachers has a picture of him drinking with students :P
