I am a new teacher I have 22 4th graders (9-10 year olds) in my class. I teach in a low income area. What types of Christmas gifts should I get my students. Remember I have to stay budget friendly. Thanks

I am assuming you mean for Christmas. I usually print candybar wrappers on the computer and put them on a Hershey bar. The kids always love them. Be sure to buy your candybars in the multi paks, they are much cheaper than by the register.

Kccmommy- love that idea! Some years I cover a composition book with scrapbooking paper and stickers tailored to their likes. They enjoyed them. One year, I bought a bunch of beads and jewelry making supplies and divided them into ziplocs for anyone who liked crafts- anyone else I gave something else to but I can't remember what.

What about pencils/pens...I know my son is getting low already on those things, or maybe a class pizza party and a small treat (chocolate santa or something of the sort) What grade do you teach?

One year (3rd grade, I think) my teacher gave all of us a set of pens (red blue and black) engraved that said "Merry Christmas from Mrs. XXXXX You can get engraved pens/pencils and other things of that sort from Oriental Trading.

My kids always have liked a homework pass to use when they choose. The teacher just prints a "coupon" that the child attaches to the assignment and turns it in. Usually there is some fine print that it can only be used on daily work type assignments--not for anything big like a science project. Just a thought...

I order books from Scholastic. There are plenty of $1 titles available and I always get coupons when parents order online. I use those coupons and pay the difference. I pick titles that work for each child's reading level and that would be interesting for them. I also give the teeny beanie babies(get them in lots on ebay or sometimes at the thrift shop) along with a lollipop, pencil and a little slinky or something like that, pushed down into one of those little stockings. I get the stockings, pencils, and little toys when they are 75-90% off after Christmas for the next year.

I save up the scholastic book order points and use those to get books for the kids. I have about 1300 to work with this year. They always have a few 1.00 or 2.00 choices.
books are great either way. Do you have a Olie's Discount store near by? They have great buys on books. It's sad to think that some children have no books in their homes.

Take a look at scholastic; they sometimes have great sales on books.

Also, I sometimes get my kids fridge magnets from www.vistaprint.com (Like: "Don't tell the other kids, but you're Mrs. Aliceacc's favorite!) or a picture of the cosmos with "Mrs. Aliceacc thinks you're a shining star!)

Then again, I teach secondary, so we're talking upwards of 180 kids-- some years I do it, some years I don't.

Or hit the dollar stores/Target and see if you can get some journals or diaries on sale-- something that will encourage writing.

Also, take a look at www.orientaltrading.com

The vistaprint.com idea is great! They periodically have 144 magnets free where you only pay a small shipping fee, like around $3.

Yep, and my kids always get such a kick out of receiving them.

They rarely get gifts from their secondary teachers because the numbers just make the expense prohibitive. So when I can get the vistaprint magnets, I do.

My kids have received books from their teachers...perhaps some kind of sale/deal thru scholastic?

Love the magnet idea...I've never seen that sale...

Too late for this year, but I buy extra back to school supplies in August when they are on sale for super cheap and do some type of supply gift...

My most popular is a composition book, pencil case, and package of pencils, but depending on what's on sale each year, it varies....

I order a LOT from Vistaprint. About every 2 or 3 weeks, they send me an email with a lot of freebies; I just pay postage and handling. The magnets are in packs of 25, so it takes a BUNCH of orders for me to get a gift to each of the 180 or so kids I normally teach. (This year I have an SAT prep class that rotates in one period a week. So, even without a homeroom, I teach 10 classes-- that's close to 400 kids. No magnets this year!!!)
