Student council question

This post is for my DD - who wants to know...

What service-related projects do other student councils get involved in?

In our HS we just did the basics like food drives and bowl-a-thons for different organizations.

In college we did adopt a highway and a community clean up day.

I probably should have been a little more specific, DD is middle school, and for all practical purposes, the students would not be able to leave the school in conjunction with a service project.

DD is in STUGO at her high school
Here's some of what they've done this year:

Collected funds for hurricane relief
Canned food drive for the local food bank
Adopt a family at Christmas
Made care packages to send to soldiers overseas (I bought a TON of socks!)
Collected for a fellow students' family who lost their home to a fire
Organized a fund raiser for the child care center for sick kids at a local hospital
Collected new and gently used books for a shelter for abused women and children
They have a rotating schedule where they spend time at a local retirement home visiting the folks there and also in the resouce room at their school helping the special ed teacher

I didn't realize what a huge commitment it would be, not just for her, but for me too when she decided to run for office!

My 4th grader is on student council. Her group will be cleaning up the school yard and planting flowers soon. They also sent out a memo to the entire student body to have the children write a letter to their teacher to show appreciation for them. They also help out in the younger grades by reading and helping the teacher. They also talk to younger children about peer pressure, bullying and anger and how to resist. She loves it~!!

-Many fundraisers (Lady Tiger 50 50 Club, Candy Basket Raffles, Lollie and Flower Sales)
