As an observer of many trips to WDW, when your in crowded conditions, take the little tykes out of the stroller and carry them. Get them up where there is some air. Imagine how hot and close it is down there.

I've got two DS (5 & 7).....
I was actually thinking about buying two cheap umbrella strollers, travelling down with them, using them, and then just leaving them at the resort (abandonment!!!) but then I was reading on another board (yes, there are others, but they are a mere distraction compared to this board....LOL) that you could go to lost and found and buy 'cheap quality' umbrella strollers for about 10 bucks (IS THIS TRUE?? Has any one else heard about this, is it worthwhile to do??), apparently left behind from people like me who came up with the first part of the idea. The cost of renting a double is prety high, what is it, $15.00 per day?? times seven days (ok, so we may not NEED one every day for the kids, but as a pull along baggabe carrier it would be nice too!)

I have never purchased anything at Lost and Found but I thought they only sold things at certain times or on certain days. Can anyone who has tried this let us know?

is anyone else wondering if FloridaCat actually has kids? I could carry my dd for all of about 10 seconds - she is heavy!

I've never heard of you being able to buy things from Lost and Found either

Bev

I know my children would have been a lot hotter up against my hot sweaty body than they were in a nice stroller that they had some personal space in.

Yes, it probably is hot and close down there. But have you ever held a child when it's really hot outside? The combined body heat makes the child and parent even hotter then they already were, not to mention that even babies get awfully heavy after you carry them for very long. I have a sling I use all the time that I intend to take to Disney, but I know there will be limits as to how long I can carry my (then) 6-month old. There is no way I can carry my 2-year old for any length of time.

I have to agree with the above poster, are you actually a parent?

I raised three and they have thier families and none has pushed a stroller.
Wednesday we observed Paramedics looking at two toddlers, the heat was unbearable even for us Floridians.
Yesterday we saw them working with a little one at AK

I'm sure that kids do get overheated at WDW almost every day when it's hot. But that's not always just due to strollers. And just because you see children in strollers does not mean that they're spending their whole day in them.

I'm very into attachment parenting and believe that babies should be held when possible, rather than placed in assorted baby-holding objects, but a stroller is not always evil. For some families, it is the best option some of the time. Sometimes parents need their hands free to do things. Sometimes parents simply can't hold a child for an extended period of time. "Average" babies may be easy to hold for most of the first year, but a lot of babies are over "average." (Exactly 50%, as a matter of fact.) My 6 month old baby is the size of an "average" 2 year old. At 5'2", I have to put him down sometimes.

It is very important to keep babies cool, but there are lots of ways to do this. The best options include simply keeping them out of sun and crowds during the hottest parts of the days. When it's necessary to be out when it is hot and crowded, battery operated fans, squirt bottles with water, and appropriate clothing are all good ways to help keep baby cool. Of course, no baby should routinely spend lots of time in a stroller if the parents can hold the baby, but it's more important because babies need to be held than because it's a way to keep them cool.

I read somewhere to take a plain white towel and pin it to the top ofthe stroller to help bounce the sun back and keep the stroller cooler. kids are better off in a stroller then walking or being held. just keep them hydrated and wiping them cool with ice water.

Heat will really stay with a dark stroller.
THey have those little clip on fans that can be used too. WE had one for our stroller(which was navy blue) and it really helped with the heat!

Strollers can be hot, but that's mostly because in the US, we like our strollers to be navy blue. Adding a white or reflective surface on top helps a lot to deflect the worst of the heat.

The real reason that children can get seriously overheated in a stroller is not that it is low to the ground, but that their parents don't take the time to check their skin temp and color often enough. You need to put a hand on a baby/toddler at least every 10 minutes when it is hot, and force liquids into them at all times (keep that bottle/sippy cup filled and tethered near the child.) It is also best to sponge them down with cool water at least once an hour if you must stay out in the sun during the hottest part of the day.

ANYONE can come down with heat exhaustion, but children are more susceptible than most adults. Learn the signs, and seek medical attention immediately if your child exhibits any of them; heat exhaustion can progress to a life-threatening heat stroke in less than 10 minutes. http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/hsb/extremeheat/FAQs.htm
