my son will be 5 in september. we are going to disney for thanksgiving. what i am wondering is should i purchase an umbrella stroller for the trip. how much does it cost to rent one at the parks vs purchasing one.

The cost of renting a single stroller at disney is $10 a day or length of stay for $8. We have debated the same thing. I do not like umbrella strollers they are hard to push and my feet always hit the bar. They are even worse the older the child is. My son is 3. We made our decision based on these criteria.

Pros to renting.
NOT having to haul the stroller on and off the bus!(this is a big one)
No room to pack a stroller in the car.

Pros to bringing your own
Being able to push your child in and out of Parks.
Waiting for bus.
Having a stroller for Downtown Disney.

Our 3 yr old is starting to walk longer with out complaints. We have decided to rent on our upcoming trip. This will be our first experience renting. I am looking forward to not hauling the stroller on and off the bus.

I hope this helps you.:confused3

We didn't bring or rent for either kid once they were 5 and both did fine. Kids have as much energy and stamina as the vast majority of adults. When my DS was 5 we went over Easter and were at the parks for at least 14 hours most days and went strong all week,no problems. Not having to deal with a stroller is so freeing you'll love it. For a 5 yr old I'd definitely wait and see and if you don't suggest it how would they know to ask for one because kids just assume they are for babies and toddlers.

My daughter is six and I'm debating the same thing we no longer have a stroller. She walks around our local amusement park and the zoo but Disney is so big and the last thing we want is a grouchy 6 year old but we also don't want to lug a stroller around I think we may just rent a stroller. The only issue is getting to the bus after a long day you may want your own.

We bought a Chicco umbrella stroller for $60 when we took the 18 MO GrandPrincess in May so we were using it for free after the 6th day. A little different issue with a 5 YO because we had to use one as young as she is. We found that we could park the stroller in one of the stroller areas at an attraction close to the front of the park when we were going back to the resort for naptime (if only 1 of us was going back for the nap, it was a hassle to deal with the stroller and a tired GrandPrincess) and it was always there a few hours later when the nap was over and we'd come back to that park. If you decide on taking an umbrella stroller, you could park it somewhere until later in the day when your 5 YO gets tired or even just to use for the back to resort trek.
