Stroller or no stroller

My DS just turned 6. He probably could walk the whole time, but if he gets tired it would be nice to have a stroller. Actually, the main reason I would like one is because my DH brings in a backpack with water and snacks, etc. When we went on rides we would put the backpack in the stroller and park it. When we bought something it would be nice to put the bags around the stroller handles, etc. I'd hate to rent strollers there because they are so expensive and the times we used them most last year was when we came home late at night and DS fell asleep on the bus. We'd put him in the umbrella stroller and push him back to the hotel room. I'd hate to carry him this year!! My question is: Is there a fairly cheap ($50 or less) stroller out there that can carry an older child??

thanks - Lori

I'm sorry I can't help you with a answer,I'm sure someone can give you some good information.I suggest you post this question on Buget Board also. :goodvibes

Look at your local Marshalls or TJ Max for a Maclaren Volo. It goes for around 50 there and will hold up to 50-55lbs. They also have a good resale value.

You can also consider some of the umbrella Chiccos.

6 is kind of the cut off for most sane people to nit use a stroller anymore. You may want to use it for getting to and from the park. But find a safe place to "park" it when you get inside.

I'm not sure I've ever seen strollers at Marshall's or TJMaxx here in RI. I don't mind walking around with the stroller, especially if we put our bags and backpack in it - that would actually be the main purpose for it. DS may ride in it from the bus stop to room on a late night.

Big Lots occasionally has a good cheap stroller.

And I think you're "sane" for doing what is the most comfortable for you and your family!!!

Thanks!!

I'll have to find the closest one because I also saw an ad for the wooden jewelry armoires for $69.99 and I'm sick of seeing all of DD11's jewelry all over her room!! Especially the free silver jewelry from another thread here!!

Graco strollers can accommodate even the heaviest 9 year old!!! Not the literider model, but any of the older graco models you should be able to get 2nd hand, they have lots of storage and can easily accommodate a 6 year old. Don't worry about how old the stroller is as long as the wheels are ok. You don't even need the seat pad.

The Graco we use for our 7yo now (I mostly use it for backpack and foods, since I don't feel like carrying anything - and when dd gets really tired she will sit for short time) has been around for probably 10 years, but hey it works great and I think I paid $15 for it. It's been to Disney 5 times and because it was so cheap, I don't care what happens to it.

Check on craigslist.org, click on your city and see what's available or place a wanted ad for a graco or maclaren stroller (heard they are great too).

I just got back with my twin 5 year olds - we did not bring or rent a stroller. We had no problems at all. In your place I would not spend money on a stroller.

I would imagine that Wal-Mart or one of those types of stores would have an inexpensive stroller. Or maybe check your local newspaper "For Sale" section and pick up a used one probably relatively inexpensively. Plus, as another poster said, if it's a cheapie and something happens to it, you won't care.

In October, I didn't use a stroller for DD5 for the first time. It was great. She did fine with all the walking and it was so much easier not lugging the stroller onto the bus and parking it then finding it again after rides. I was hesitant to go without it at first, but I'm so glad I did. No more strollers for me.

I just found one at Kmart that holds a child up to 50 pounds for $45. Its the delta luv discovery III.

However, even though our 6 year old exceeds our old stroller weight limit, we're still taking it. It cant be used regularly at this weight but for our trip, it should be fine. And if by some very strange fluke, it disintigrated under his weight, well, we're done using it anyway.

We bought one for $19.99 from Winn Dixie for our then 50 lb 6 year old :sunny:
It worked well for us and withstood 3 weeks of Florida

Under normal circumstances most people might consider 5 an appropriate age to give up the stroller but WDW is not normal circumstances. I would rather see a 7 - 10 year old in a stroller than crying and screaming because he is just too tired to walk anymore. Not only is he miserable but so are the parents and anyone else who witnesses the meltdown. Further, carrying said child out of the park -- along with the backpack and supplies, and anything you bought during the day -- can create it's own set of problems. Get a stroller -- even if it's a cheap one. The day's end will be so much nicer for everyone involved.

I vote for a stroller. We used one in May for our then almost 6 yr old twins--we rented a single that they took turns using. At home they wouldn;t be caught dead in a stroller, but at WDW they love it. It keeps them from running out of steam. And I agree--I love having a place to park all our stuff!

I just got back from Target!! I was looking for the ones referred to in this thread but they didn't have them there. I ended up buying a Safety 1st Avila which is pretty sturdy and has a compartment underneath for bags, etc. It was only $39.99. Thanks everyone!!

I've seen lots and lots of "bigger" kids in strollers. I wouldn't hesitate to get one for my DS5 - there is a lot of walking! I bet people on these boards could tell you how many miles you walk in WDW in a day. I wish somebody would push me around! Plus a stroller is great for carrying your stuff too! Have a great time!

I don't think there is an age cutoff for strollers. If they made one that carried 130lbs I could use one @ WDW :teeth: .

Oh boy... I dont know if thats such a good idea. I always rented one for dd, and when I went on a ride, or in to a show, we never left anything on it that we ever expected to see again. If that was your plan, consider the possibilities before leaving anything at all valuable out of your sight.
