I'm taking my DD1 and plan on taking her umbrella stroller (Chicco Caddy) and we are flying for the very first time ever and.............what is gate-check? :confused3

I will try to answer and anyone be free to correct me if I am wrong. Gate check I believe means that you can use the stroller right up to the airplane and then leave the stroller right by the entrance to the plane. These will be tagged and put in last at the belly of the plane. So when they land the strollers will be the first thing unloaded and put right by the entrance to the plane when you get off. I did this last fall and it was very handy thing to have.

The previous poster is correct. You can use your stroller up until you board the plane. It receives a tag at check-in that designates it for gate check. Yes, it is one of the first things unloaded but you might want to wait until everyone is off the plane before retrieving it at the door as it may take that long for it to arrive. Also if you are concerned about it getting dirty you might want to put it in a travel bag (you can get them at the check-in coiunter I believe, or purchase them at BRU).

If you do bring your stroller to the gate (and I recommend it), remember that you have to fold it up and put it through the xray machine at the security check point. Just wanted to give you a head's up on that.

When you go to your gate, check in at the desk and they will fill out a gate check tag for you.

I had plans on checking in online the day before my departure, so do I still go to the check-in desk to get a gate-check tag?

Yes, once you clear security and get to the gate for your flight tell the FA that you want to gate check the stroller and she will give you a specific tag for it. Tag the stroller, wheel it to the door, fold it securely and take of any thing extra (toys cupholder etc) and leave it just ouside. You may see other strollers and wheelchairs as well.

When you arrive and deplane it should be waiting for you but occasionally it takes a while.

Also, when checking in online you may also be able to print your boarding pass, if so and you are not checking bags you can proceed though securiy and to the gate. Otherwise if you are checking bags you still need to check in curbside or at the counter to check your luggage.

Gate checking the stroller is so convenient!

I have done this a few times and it works out great. I'm not sure if anyone already posted this or not, but when you are heading back home, be sure to tell them at the desk that you need another tag to gate check the stroller. They don't use the same tag twice (at least from my experiences).

You can even bring your own large black garbage bag, if you don't want to spend a lot of money! But it will protect your stroller from any damage it may incur during the trip. I have never done this before, but I have always traveled with a cheap umbrella stroller. I am going to the Bahamas in May and am bringing my brand new Maclaren. You better believe I will be protecting it!
