Stroller for older child?

We have a Bob revolution Duo (you wouldn't need the duo, but it does come in a single version) that fits our 5 and almost 3 yr old and is super easy to push around. You know your kids best, and I would not hesitate to bring a stroller if you think you need one. I don't care who flames me or gives me dirty looks for pushing my kids in a stroller. I probably won't even notice any of those dirty looks anyway because I will be having such a great time with my happy kids! If my kids are happy, I'm happy and that is all that matters. I say ignore those that feel the need to judge others. If that is what they notice most when they go to Disney, they really must not be having a good time.

On a side note, we just got back from Washington DC and there is a LOT of walking!! We used the metro exclusively and I think we walked more in DC than we do normally in Disney if that gives you any idea. I would DEFINATELY bring a stroller. We brought a single and really wished we had brought our double.

I miss having a stroller to not only put the kid in but to carry our stuff. I always get stuck being the pack mule.

she is just at 50lbs and I do not even know the names of strollers that would accommodate her to even look.

My DD7 was 48 pounds and did fine in her Volo last month. It was a little harder to steer than it has been in the past, but it's a 5-year-old stroller, so it may have been age rather than weight.

We brought it as an emergency backup, and didn't even tell her we had it. The second or third day, we pulled it out - between the heat and the crowds, I didn't have the heart to make her walk. And we only spent a couple hours in the park each day, before we bailed for nap and swim.

My son is going to be 7 tomorow and he sat in a stroller last week. You know your child- if they are going to be tired let them ride! Who cares??!! No one else's business but your own. Anyway, I rented a Baby Jogger City Series from Orlando Stroller Rental and I can not say enough good things about them. The stroller was waiting in Bell Services when we arrived. It was clean as can be! The best part about renting with an older child is that you do not have to drag it through the airport because they really don't need it there. Plus, if they are really tired, you can push them out of the park (I hate it when kids are crying as they leave the Disney Rentals at the gate and their poor parents are stuck carrying them! :( ) Pushing an older child around in any Maclaren is hard on the wrists. The Baby Jogger is a dream- very easy to push! Worth every cent of the rental cost!!!!

Have a wonderful time!!! :)

OP here. I just wanted to say I appreciate all you guys being so helpful and especially nonjudgmental. As you can tell by my signature - parenthood to DD6 is NOT my 1st time - LOL - and now that I am in my 40s - I really feel that preemptive measures are best taken whenever possible. ;)

This has been a great thread! We are going in Sept for my son's 7th birthday and I recently decided I would bring our stroller. He walks everywhere but walking that much will wear him out - so if we can have a place to put him at the end of the day or to give him a break - I am all for it. Also, he likes to take quick naps - and I don't want to hold him on my lap or sit down while he does - he can do it during the day in the stroller and we won't have to head back to the hotel. My mom is going with us and she just had a knee replacement - so it will provide her some stability as well and finally - I will admit it - I want a place to keep all my stuff!!

I don't anticipate him staying in it all day long - but I am all for the preemptive measure!

As someone else has said, spend some time pushing your child around in the stroller. Otherwise, you may be wishing you had a stroller for you and someone to push you around in it after a couple of days.

We had an incident at Universal Studios when my daughter was 8 and weighed maybe 60 pounds and I had to spend the rest of our vacation pushing her around in a wheelchair at Disneyland. I ended up using muscles I never knew I had. Pushing a child of that weight around amusement parks is a lot different than pushing one around a shopping mall.

Good luck with whatever stroller decision you make.

A few months ago someone posted a link to a First Years stroller on Amazon. It was only $40 shipped and it had good reviews.

I had a perfectly good stroller but then I accidently fell on it and broke it last fall. You'd think since my dd was 4 at the time that it would have been no big deal to not have a stroller. However, that child does not like to walk. She acts like she's dying if she has to walk more than 10 minutes at a time. I knew that our trips to our local theme park would not be fun if she was complaining about walking the whole time. So I bought that stroller in the princess pattern. It goes up to 50lbs and is so easy to push. She's happy. I am happy. It's all good. And I plan on taking it with us to Disney next summer when she's 6.

My boys just turned 5 and I too will bring a stroller. We had a Jeep double stroller, but it broke last year so I too will be looking for one on Craigslist for our upcoming trip. I am positive they will need the stroller because it is hot. Personally I like the stroller because I always know where they are at all times. My kids do tend to stay with me, but it only takes a second for them to become distracted by something.

The stroller provides rest for the kids and peace of mind for me in a busy park.

Good luck and have fun!

We have this stroller ~ The First Years Jet in Pink Princess. I paid $26 including free shipping from Amazon.com. They are regularly about $40 and hold up to 50lb. There is also The First Years Ignite that is a step up from the Jet that is about $60. We take it on all day trips because my DD will take a short nap in it and at Disney will fall asleep at the end of the day (without warning), sometimes before the older kids are done for the day.

My DD is 7 , 50in tall and 59lbs and I am still debating the pros and cons of a stroller. We did 6 flags this past weekend and she was fine, also fine in the mall, the boardwalk, museums etc.. but Disney is so much more walking than anywhere else we go. I am debating how hard it'll be to push her vs how tired and cranky she'll be walking. There are several pros and cons, but I don't care at all about anyone who thinks she's too big or too old for a stroller, it's no one's business but ours.

This how we feel too...it is no one's business but ours. :thumbsup2

I would suggest going to a store that has lots of styles and trying her out in them. There are some brands that have a 55 lb weight limit, but you may run into problems with her shoulders fitting comfortably and her head being too tall for the canopy. This was the issue I had with my son. And make sure you push her around a bit. My son is only 35 lbs, but trying to push him in some strollers with a 40 lb weight limit was a challenge!

I would look into the Maclaren and Britax models and find out which ones have the 55 lb weight limit and which ones are widest. That will give you something to keep an eye out for on Craigslist. You might find one at a garage sale, like I did.

If you have the space, the jogging strollers have higher weight limits and are much roomier. Just look for one with a rotating front wheel.

We love the Maclaren. We have had it for years. My son is 6, he sits in it often (he is a runner, I get nervous due to safety). I always take it on long trips. If nothing else, it holds the stuff.

I think you guys have actually talked me into bringing one!!!

I was going to chance it, but if you guys are bringing them for older children, I don't think I'll stand a chance with my 4 year old. I was probably smoking something if I thought I could go without one, but I just didn't want to lug it around.

Does SWA allow this as one of your bags?

P.S. I had tried to fit my DD into her old Britax Forerunner, but couldn't get her "in" because of the tray. I was so glad I was diligent in filing all my manuals because I found out it is a removable tray!!! Didn't know that and just saved myself buying a new stroller!

Thanks all!
Jenny

You didn't ask for advice, but... :teeth: You have GOT to stop that. If people can't carry whatever it is themselves, it doesn't go to the parks. Period.

I know you know this, but your six year old isn't your eight year old. Instead of going with the expectation that a stroller is needed, go thinking it's not - and bring the phone number for A Baby's Best Friend (abbf.com) for a much less expensive rental that you can have 24 hours a day if it turns out mega-walking isn't for her.

And while you didn't request, and seem to be choosing to ignore, recommendations other than strollers, please do consider adapting your park touring to your children instead of your children to your park touring. This obviously isn't your first trip and likely won't be your last. Relax.

I appreciate you posting this thread. My situation is a little different as my daughter is only 4, but she weighs 47 pounds so I have been researching strollers with a larger weight limit. We won't be returning to Disney World until next year, but I know that a stroller is a must! On our last trip we used the stroller for the long walks in between different sections of the park and then parked ours in a central location and walked in between attractions. We rented a baby jogger City mini last year from Magic Strollers, and our daughter fit well and it was super easy to push. The weight limit on that stroller is 50 lbs which is the only reason I am looking at a few others with a 55lb weight limit instead.

This all makes me so glad I had the baby last year, so I can justify just getting a double stroller and telling DD to sit for a few minutes if she wants to. We went to test out a citi classic (like we are renting from Orlando Strollers) and both of them loved it so much they refused to get out. My son actually started crying when we made him leave after 20 mins!

I have it all planned out, including storing supplies in water proof bags on the bottom for when it rains! We are clipping them in so that when we fold up the stroller they stay there. We also got them the rain cover so the kids can hide from those late August sudden downpours.

"Tailoring my trip to my child" doesn't work for us. There is no way we would limit our traveling to 30-40 minutes of activity time before going to the room to rest. DD is not friendly for any activity, is moody and makes the lives of every person around her hell if she can't stop or eat right now when she decides she needs to. If your kids give you a couple hours or were born with patience count your blessings. DS is already better than her at 1 year old so I can get where parents are coming from thinking other parents are lazy, too lax or just bad parents but you have no idea what somebody else's life is like.

Nobody should feel bad if their kid is just one of the ones who needs a mobile break.

You can get some strollers on rent as well. You don’t need to go to shop and buy one which actually is going to be a waste after a period of time.
