Does anyone know if I will charged a carry on fee for my double stroller if I push it through the airport and check it at the door?

The only airline I have heard of charging for gate checking a stroller is American

You have been misinformed. What you mean is American Airlines is now requiring all large, non-collapsing strollers and strollers over 20 pounds to be checked at the ticket counter. No charge.

OP - Did you check Continental's website? This type of information is always available on your airline's web site:

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/infant.aspx

No, I did not check the website. That would have been too easy! ;) (Thanks a million for the link!) From what I can tell, it looks like my stroller would be free of charge BUT it does sound like it will be handed back to me in a million pieces in a plastic bag?! Strollers must get pretty beat up in the luggage compartmet of airplanes?

We always bring our double jogger stroller and we gate check it with Continental. You are not charged for this.

Ramp operations agents take the stroller from the Jetway (if the CSRs gate check it) and then put it on a cart to be pushed to the baggage compartment of the aircraft. Once all the general luggage has been put onto the aircraft, then they load the strollers onto the aircraft. Why? Ops agents at the arrival airport will have to unload them first so you have them when you roll through out the airport.
