Stretch your dollars.....Eat a kids meal!

My favorite CS meal in Epcot is the Plato del Nino from Cantina de San Angel...and it wasn't until my third time having it that I realized it was 'technically' on the children's menu! They never carded me when I bought it, so it can't be too much of a crime! :rolleyes1

:wave2: Hello!

Glad to see this thread!

I am totally ordering kids CS meals in WDW (or if my fiance isn't too hungry I'll share some of his adult meal) I can't eat big meals in the heat and I hate being wasteful.

(Also if I eat small, then I'll have room for Dole whip, school bread and Mickey Cookie Sandwiches!)

AND I'll get applesauce! Mmmmm!

Shae they aren't like the kids meals in DLRP though!

Can you say 'Mickey pizza and mickey burger'? :woohoo:

I asked a question about this not too long ago. I wanted to buy Mickey waffles to take back to our resort rooms for breakfast. I asked if I could buy a kids meal, because I want my waffles shaped like Mickey, even if I am 32!

The consensus on that thread seemed to be "Go for it!"

The reason I was concerned enough to ask, though, was that I seem to remember the menu boards saying "Kid's Picks (Children 9 and Under)".

While it doesn't seem like a big deal to me for an adult to order a child's menu, if the posted "rule" says 9 and under, I could see why some would see this as an issue - after all, don't we debate the posted rules about mugs, line jumpers, pools, and etc. endlessly around here?

Maybe it says that to coincide with the kids DDP. Meaning that if you have the kids DDP, you could only get those "picks" for your 9 and under child as part of the kids DDP.

Also I think it is just suggesting....more like this meal is suitable to the tastes and appetites of those age 9 and under. If it were a "rule" I'm sure Disney would have it clearly posted: ONLY for age 9 and under and said child must be present at the time of ordering. There is nowhere that I know of that says this (that I know of). Not like the explicit rules on the back of park tickets for example.

Nothing wrong with ordering something you want to eat. As pp's said, Disney is not hurting at all by adults eating kids meals. A sale is a sale is a sale. They don't hear an adult scheming, all they hear is Ka-Mickey-Ching.

Oh no, I totally agree - a sale IS a sale, and I'm pretty sure Disney doesn't care - kids meals are cheap to make.

But I was trying to guess why others on the thread might see it as a firm rule. Based on my own concerns about being told off if I tried to buy Mickey waffles because of the posted signs, I figured that's where the idea of kids meals being only for kids originated. Plus, I think in places like Friendly's they enforce that pretty strongly - and I've always wanted that chicken fingers basket with the fingers sticking up on skewers! :lmao:

Anyway, I like your explanation, and also the explanation that it is to illustrate what items kids under 9 on the DDP may pick. That makes a lot of sense to me. (And enables me to buy Mickey waffles guilt free. :cheer2:.)

:sad2: Just because they didn't "ask" the ages of the kids in your party, doesn't mean it was the right thing to do.. Kind of like stuffing your kids shoes to get them to ride on the cool rides, or claiming your kid is a certain age to get them into the parks for free, or using your refillable resort mug from 2002, on each trip since.. Cheating the system and lying are a) not good behaviors to show in front of ANY child, let alone your own, and b) will ruin it for the rest of us who play by the rules when the take kids meals away because people like you bought kids meals for adults!!!!! Lying is lying. Shame on you. :sad2:

I don't see any similarity here. When you fake a person's height to get them on a ride, you are putting them and others in physical danger (height restrictions on rides are due to physics, not mental maturity). When you lie about a child's age, you are cheating Disney out of money.

If you are an adult ordering a children's meal, you are paying less money but you are getting less food. Is it better to buy a larger meal that you then throw away? Is it better to waste food?

And unless you specifically said you were buying the food for a child, it's not a lie anyway.

Also,

Say I save $3 eating a kids meal and not getting really full. I'll probably then spend $5 or so on a drink and a snack later, which I wouldn't have done if I had a huge meal. So they still get the same money out of me!

Justsyd2 - according to your interpretation of Disney's "rules", I can't order a kids meal from Flametree for my 1 year old since the kids menu is only for guests 3-9.

You are so absolutely right!

So, the REAL scam is that Disney CLEARLY could care less about 0-2 year olds! :rotfl:

Buy a kids meal if you want a kids meal... buy a big adult meal if you want an adult meal... bring a soggy PB&J if you want a soggy PB&J.

We've been happily buying kids meals for years. They fill us up right, and Disney even makes a good $5 extra in the price we pay to buy extra LARGE drinks! I am sure they don't mind that!

For some, it's not about the cost, but more about what you feel like eating.

Just reading through this thread. I agree with Torsie, any money I would save ordering a kids meal would be giving me more dollars to spend in the stores anyway, the money wouldn't be going anywhere but Disney;)

I have found this thread quite interesting as I had been wondering about this recently. I have decided to use this trip to try new kinds of food but if it was something I was really unsure about I think I would consider buying a kids size portion rather than risk wasting the food. The way I look at it if I ask a CM if it's ok and they say yes then I'm happy that I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be

It's called a kid's meal because it's a smaller portion and comes in a cute plate.

The cute plates are no more - they replaced them with normal heavy paper plates about a year ago. My kids loved the cute Mickey plates - but I get the new ones are more economical and better for the environment.

Any my take is at a CS it is not cheating the system for an adult to eat a kids meal. At a TS it is different - but at a CS you can order what ever you want it is your $ and your meal.

Sorry to hear about no more Mickey plates. They were really cute. I would only order a kids meal at a CS. I would imagine you could not order a kids meal at at TS place.

I don't see any harm in ordering a kids meal. Disney gets a lot of my money in other ways so why not save were you can. Plus some times who wants to eat a big meal? The past Feb I was not all that hungry the day we spend at CBR so I order the kids hamburger meal and it hit the spot. Not too big and it was very good.

We have been pleased with the taste of CS food but always felt some meals were a little big for lunch on a hot day.

Try ordering a kids meal for everybody! You get (varies from park to park) a cheeseburger that is a little bigger than a Wendy's 99 cent burger, a small fry- similar to Wendy's size, and 1 more side (usually fruit/jello/cookie). It is all tasty and will not overload your belly. It comes with a small drink and costs 5 bucks.

An adult combo with a drink is close to 10 bucks.

We just got back and they never asked about the ages of those in our party.

We munched on our snacks all day except for our stops in an air conditioned restaurant. The A/C and a fresh cold drink felt good as the heat index was between 95 and 100 most of the week we were in WDW.

Would it be equally as wrong to order an adult meal for a 9 year old who is a hearty eater???

Sharon

I dont see how this is a negative thing?

I suffer from a severe stomach condition and usually cant even finish the childrens meals. I cant see spending money on food I can only eat a portion of and putting that food to waste. Plus the adult meals are usually much greasier than the child for some reason.

I asked a CM if i could purchase a kids meal and I was told "Doesn't matter what you get ma'am, Its still a purchase"

She then went on to say "Some people waste so much we wish they would purchase kids meals!"

And if someone feels like having a childs meal instead of a adult meal- just think of all the food thats being SAVED rather than wasted subjecting disney to RAISE instead of lower prices.

Also, not every american, or anyone for that manner, is used to eating large portions throughout the day. The childs serving is actually the RIGHT adult amount for a breakfast/lunch and sometimes even dinner option! Anyone who understands proper nutrition will know this.

So all I have to say to those of you who think this is a negative is- glad your stomach can eat a lunch sized meal during the day. None of my friends, who don't have stomach conditions can, and they buy the childrens meals as well. Its either buy from disney, or bring our own lunch... which means less money for disney.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

My mother asked (when we were there last year) if she could get the kids meal and the waitress said absolutely. My Mother in law also does this at many places. hth

I don't either. I have bought kids meals at home and when I vacation. I ask first. No problems from the establishments. Why should it be a problem for someone not running one of the businesses? Eat and let eat, I say! :)
