I'm sitting here getting all worked up because I can't figure out how to make my job sound more interesting than other parents' jobs.

I have to present in my daughter's class today on my career. The problem is that my career is really boring to a six year old. I'm in an administrative position. I don't know how to make statistics, writing policy, strategic planning and personnel managment interesting.

I'm worried that I'll really let my daughter down. I usually miss all the school stuff because I do have a demanding career. I just want to make this special and wow the kids. My daughter has asked me to wear one of my power suits. Ugh, I'm not looking forward to this.

Your her mom and she's proud of you and loves you. Everything will be fine, you'll see.

My husband works in the financial industry and he feels the same way going up against policemen, firemen, etc. The kids always seem to enjoy it and my kids never seemed to feel that it was boring. They just enjoyed having him there. I'm sure it will be the same for you. Put your power suit on and have fun.

Your daughter will be glad that you came to her class to speak. I do not think she will care if your career does not sound exciting enough (as you said). In the end she will remember that you showed up, nothing more.

Geesh, I am boring as a SAHM.:lmao:

As a former Girl Scout Leader......your presence and speaking about yourself in a postion of power is something that girls need input on. In addition boys with SAHM's may not realize that some mom's work.

While the job may be boring to the kids, the fact that you will be there for your dd and speak well in front of them is impressive in itself.

Now go get them....:thumbsup2

I think you could really make your job sound appealing to a lot of kids as you probably get to "play" on the computer all day for your job, right :lmao: .

Bring it down to their level and show them how your job is like being whatever character is popular with their age group. I will use Pokemon since that is what was big when my kids were that age:

You can be Pikicu-your job is to make sure all the other little Pokemon characters do whatever it is that they do so they can all get to whatever that place is they are all trying to get to (I didn't follow it all that closely but you get the idea :lmao: ).

In 4th grade, DD thought I was too boring too, plus not politically correct since what I do is lead Bible studies.

So she had DH come instead, but not in his real job capacity (lawyer, also boring.) She had him come in dressed in his Reserves uniform and with a powerpoint presentation of his pictures from Iraq. (which she designed). He had a little script that she approved, but all the kids wanted to talk about was what kind of guns did he have and how many people did he kill. He's never killed anyone, so they thought he was pretty boring after all.

Point being, kids this age are crazy anyway, so don't worry about it.

And from all us sahm's, thank you for showing up in a power suit and showing our daughters that it's not just the daddies who can have a corporate career. Just because I've chosen the position I'm in doesn't mean I want DD to think that's her only option as a woman:thumbsup2 Who knows who you will inspire today?

Kudos to you for posting that bolded part and I agree completly:thumbsup2 I want my daughter (and son) to know that what I chose is a CHOICE but in no way a requirenment.

OP--I really think it will be better than you think. Have fun today.

This was so well put. This SAHM wants to tell you the same thing. Go. Talk about what you do. Talk about why it's important for what your company/organization does. Talk about some of the fun stuff that can happen in an office. You'll do a great job!:thumbsup2

Open up with a magic trick:rotfl:

:thumbsup2 I'll bring the spreadsheet showing that my company is actually making a profit during these trying times.

OK...daughter is dropped off at school, son is at daycare. I am taking in business cards (I have plenty), coloring books from my company with crayons and a story about how my job is to make sure everyone else can do their job and help people. If it looks like I'm losing them, I'll tell them that I can fire people...that should liven it up. (JK!!!)

I'll have to check back tonight and let you know how it goes. I'm more nervous than when I present at a Board meeting...ugh!

:thumbsup2 Oh, well done! I was going to suggest taking along something for them--coloring books and crayons are great.

I never had to do this, thank heavens--my ex is a cop so he always volunteered for this kind of thing. And he's not just any old cop but a K9 cop. Between the dog and the police car, he had it easy peasey. :lmao: The dog was always the star attraction.

You will be fine!!!!

You are going to hit a homerun, I am sure of it!:thumbsup2

can you come up with a couple analogies that relate to their lives? For example: "Just like your principal keeps track of the teachers and makes ssure that their jobs are getting done, I keep track of the people who work for my company and provide help when needed." I would try to relate it to something they already know about.

I think you will do just great. Kids at that age tend to be embarrassed by the parents. Have Fun.

My DH is a Police Officer so he has no problem. The kids when they were younger use to flock all over him. More than one kid would ask him to shoot his gun. Yikes..

Lara,
Are you kidding? Don't be modest. The admin person at Dh's company is the person who really runs the place. Dh the company owner and the other "professionals" would be lost without her. Whenever there is turnover in this positon, I get stressed. :scared1: It's really difficult to run the business without the admin person. And don't even get me started on how hard it is to find a good, competent person for this position:worship: .... that's why when one announces she is pregnant or she really wants to be an artist, I panic.

Be proud. You make the CEO and everyone else look good.
