Our seven year old daughter has strep throat for the first time. She is taking amoxicillin twice a day, but she still has an on/off fever. She has been on the antibiotic now for 2 days. In your experience, how long does the fever take to go away and stay away? She has started eating and acting better.
Thanks so much!!
Chris

Usually 24 hours. If it continues into the next day you might want to give the Dr a call. She might have something else along with the strep but since it isn't responding it is probably a virus.

I've always been told by my pediatrician to wait 48 - 72 hours for an antibiotic to work. Usually it is 24 hours, but with stronger infections it can take longer. If she is still running a fever by tomorrow, I'd give the dr a call. It is possible that the amoxicillian isn't strong enough and she'll need a new antibiotic.

Amoxicillin is the medicine of choice, as long as there is no history of allergic reaction to penicillin.

It takes 24 hrs from a full dosage, for relief to be felt. For example, if the prescription is 500mg 2x a day-24 hours from the second dosage would show symptom relief.

If she is eating better, that's the first sign. Not the lowering of a fever. Also, repeating another poster, strep can be tricky. Immediate symptoms aren't always obvious. If she has had the infection in her system longer than a week, there is a risk of a secondary infection.

I would not wait 72 hours to call the doctor back.

DD usually feels better in 24-48 hours.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful information. She is still cool now and ate a good dinner.
