Heya everyone.
This cat had been hanging out in our backyard for a while and I really didn't think anything of it, then one day my mom comes to tell us the cat had kittens. So I went out there and gave them some water and convinced my dad to let me give them food (the mama cat was probably starving.) My dad is calling animal control to get the mama and were giving the kitty's away (theres 4.)

I was just wondering if anybody else had experience with this. I want to know... what is going to happen to the mama? I don't want her to go if they are going to harm her, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Bell

if the kittens are seperated from their mother before they are 6 weeks old, you will have to hand feed them. I wopuld recommend waiting until they are 6 weeks before calling animal control.

and to be perfectly honest, stray cats normally do not make good house cats so most pounds will not even try to place them.

My suggestion is to have the animal control people come and get the mama AND the kittens, or if you can, take them to a shelter yourself. They will keep her with the kittens until they are old enough to be weaned and adopted. That will give the kittens a good start in life. The extra time at the shelter may help socialize the mama, making her more adoptable.

In April we adopted a four-year-old spayed female from the Animal Rescue League. I thought about adopting a kitten, but chose instead to get an older cat. I don't know much about the background of our new cat. All I know is that she and another cat (male) were found abandoned in an apartment. She has turned out to be the most sweet, loving, gentle cat I've ever owned. Even a cat with a hard-luck story has a chance of being adopted---it depends on its personality. And yes, there's hope that the mama would be adopted by somebody who doesn't necessarily want to get a young kitten.

There are many "no kill" shelters that never give up on adopting out an animal, and give them lots of time to find just the right forever family. You might check into finding this kind of shelter if you're worried about what will happen to the mama.

It's my opinion that it's in the best interests of the mama and kittens that they all get into a shelter to be spayed/neutered, get microchiped, get their vaccinations, get a health check by a vet, get placed on a proper diet, and get off the streets. Stray cats have such a shortened, dangerous life. They are susceptible to disease, attacks from other animals, malnourishment, etc.

It's really kind of you and your family to take care of the mama and her kittens. If you discuss these options with your mom and dad, I'm sure you'll come up with a plan that's in the animal's best interests. Good luck!
