I recently read a post that paper straws were onboard the Disney Wonder... is this the case for the Fantasy? If so, is it just for drinks of the day? Or are straws by the drink station also paper now? Curious if we should pack our own. Thanks!

On the Fantasy 1/5/19 cruise: The only time I recall having a straw on the cruise was a paper straw in my drink on Castaway Cay. I don’t believe there were straws of any kind at the drink station?

We were also on the 1/5 cruise. Yep, no straws and only paper ones on request. We requested a straw for my daughter in the MDRs and in Cabanas, and sometimes we had to get replacements because they wilted.

I am curious about the no straws on deck. I am guessing this means there will be more spills to clean up because the only way you can drink is with the lid off right? Or do they provide covers now that are similar to what is used with coffee?

I am completely fine with generally no straws but I am curious what do they do for kids cups at dinner.

Simpler than that. They do not provide covers anymore. Didn’t see a soda spill during my recent cruise on Fantasy. I did see plenty of soft-serve ice cream on the deck. They had an attendant there pretty much at all times with a mop.

So in the dinning rooms where they previously had a covered drink for 2 year olds for example they are no longer covering the drink?

Our son drinks only water so maybe it’s different with Shirley Temples and sodas. On every cruise before this one, they brought the plastic glass with a lid and a straw. This time, they only brought the glass. I didn’t check what other tables got.

I highly suspect that if you ask they will provide in that situation. I will test it in a couple of months.

We just got off the Fantasy. We traveled with a 2 year-old. She had milk at every dinner. It never came with a lid or straw (and we never had a spill!), but it did come in the hard plastic cup. The special non-alcoholic drinks on the menu did, however, come with a paper straw.

I will have to work on my 2 year old's drinking abilities and my 8 year old's clumsiness. :)

Sadly, all of the DCL fleet has gone to paper straws, which are extremely non-durable, taste disgusting, and are not available at the drink stations. We gave boxes of plastic straws as part of our FE gifts.

I understand the dissatisfaction with the paper straws but whether a cost cutting move or an environmental one (as Disney states) I wonder if they would approve of people bringing one use plastic straws onboard.

We cruised in November and hated the paper straws. Luckily I had read about the disappearance of the straws so brought my own stainless steel reuseable one. It worked great. So much so that I bought I whole set of them to have at home as well. I posted this link on one of the other straw threads too. Love them!!

They have all different lengths and some angled ones and even one for a smoothie. They are easy to clean as well. Like them so much more than the reuseable plastic ones.

I received a few as an FE along with the brush to clean them.

This is great! Thank you Disney for doing the right thing. People can easily adjust. Bring your own metal straws. I carry them in my car all the time along with my own coffee and beverage cups. Plastic is destroying our oceans. We will pack our straws for our upcoming Fantasy Cruise in February. 8th Disney cruise and am excited about this change.

If you buy DCL’s “green” justification for eliminating plastic straws, then I guess the lids would be just as bad for the environment, and eliminating them falls under the same logic?

I can see them keeping lids for hot coffee, to avoid people getting burned by a spill.
