Straws- specifically Disney Fantasy

If you’re worried about drink spills at dinner just ask for a second cup and only pour in a inch or two of liquid. If there is a spill it won’t be bad.

What is really sad is there are trillions of pounds of plastic floating around in the ocean destroying sealife.
Regarding US sources, paper products do more harm to the environment than plastic.

Very little plastic from US sources winds up in oceans. It goes to land fill, and no way for it to get to oceans.

I fully support not supplying plastic straws up on deck where it can easily blow overboard (even if guests are being diligent, accidents happen, especially in strong winds). But, it would be better for the environment for the MDR to serve plastic straws than paper.

Foreign sources of plastic on the other hand....

How do you drink a smoothie without a straw? With a spoon?

Sadly, they give you a paper straw with a disintegration cycle shorter than the melting of the actual drink. Plus, the paper straw taints the flavor of the drink, at least compared to plastic straws.

We cruised on the Dream recently and there were no lids provided. We have small children and need them for our younger two. Tried to do without for our middle son (3) and he spilled his drink during embarkation lunch.

I do keep a Boon kit with me that proved great for him. No link handy, but it’s a reusable plastic straw and silicone cover that stretches over the cup and has a hole for the straw. Highly recommend.

Since I only had one with me, I used it for him and took a thermos cup or sippy to the dining room for our toddler.

This is great! Thank you Disney for doing the right thing. People can easily adjust. Bring your own metal straws. I carry them in my car all the time along with my own coffee and beverage cups. Plastic is destroying our oceans. We will pack our straws for our upcoming Fantasy Cruise in February. 8th Disney cruise and am excited about this change.
I totally agree! We always asked for no drinking draw in the past and it’s great that we don’t have to do that anymore.

Sorry, that's a silly argument. Only because the ship burns a lot of fuel it does not mean that it is ok to pulute the ocean with plastic. Those are two separate issues, both are really problematic on their own. It is for sure only a small contribution to a much bigger problem, but I fully support it.

Absolute Rubbish. The oil/waste/CO2 per passenger on a cruise ship, causes a lot more damage than a few straws in landfill

There are entire packs of 10+ reusable stainless steel and/or silicone straws for sale at less than $15 on amazon. They come with brushes so you can clean them. Those of you insisting on spending money on straws, just get the reusable ones!

I would love it if they put "disposable plastic straws" on the "not allowed" list and enforced it.

I would agree with this, that N.American plastics are going to land waste, not the ocean. In fact, I remember reading that most of the plastics that have ended up in plastic island have come from 5 rivers, all Asian. But here's the kicker that no one thinks about. What does your city do with it's waste and recycling? I bet a lot is actually shipped to Asia. Gone are the days when it all stayed in the landfill just outside of town. There's just too much of it. They've actually found garbage in Asia with local store brand names on it. So maybe cutting down here, even on recyclables (which can't all be recycled and still end up in the landfill) can still help.

We were on the 1/5 sailing and the only times we had straws they were paper. It made drinking a milkshake very difficult.

Buy a set of reusable ones if you must have a straw to drink with. They come in different diameters. My family stopped using straws - yes, even for shakes and smoothies - when my sister had to go to speech therapy for a tongue thrust and the therapist told us how using straws contributed to that - but there are options besides plastic.

I agree with the importance of cutting down on waste, including recyclables. However, paper straws are not greener than plastic (except in zoos/aquariums and such where the plastic straws can directly harm the animals).

Paper does not decompose in land fills because of lack of oxygen and lasts as long as plastic.

Paper straws require more energy to produce than plastic straws.

Paper straws require the cutting down of more trees.

I hate the straw ban, I've never once littered in my entire life and sucky people have ruined it by trashing the oceans. I really don't understand how people can do that, it's not hard to throw something in a garbage. I don't really want to use reusable straws and worry about cleaning them. How do you drink a thick milkshake without anything?

Just like you drink a drink. It's really not that difficult. If it's that thick (which, IMHO ew...might as well eat melted ice cream), use a spoon.

Or if you can't be bothered to clean them (not difficult, they come with a brush), see the link I posted to biodegradable "plastic" straws.
