I know that straws aren't allowed at AK for the safety of the animals, but does that include the sippy cups that have the straws in them? Dd will be 2 on our next trip and I planned on taking her sippy cup to AK since they don't have straws (and I totally understand and agree with the reasoning behind it), but I think that the plastic straw that wont be removed from her sippy cup (she or her brother wont be able to even take off the lid) is different than your typical drinking straw. Would it be ok to take the sippy in or should I just pack the oldest, rattiest shirt she will have and let her drink from a real cup that day? WWYD? TIA

You can bring in sippy cups. But, AK had straws in October. They are a new kind - felt and tasted like they were made of some kind of paper- which would not be harmful to the animals.

we took our sippy straw cup in with us, i didn't even think about it, then again we were only there about 1 hour ...

They do indeed have new straws now at AK, animal friendly supposedly, a CM told me they were made of paper. Takes awhile to get used to using it. They're now working on paper lids.

Aren't the straws in a sippy cup actually attached to the sippy cup? I mean, there's very little risk of it becoming detached, right? I would think it would be fine in the parks.

We actually didnt know about the rule about straws until we went to eat at Pizzafari and DH asked for straws.

So up until then the kids were drinking from Capri Sun juice bags with the straws. Security looked in our bags didnt say anything and several CMs walked by as they were drinking them and never said a word.

Now that I know I would probably just bring water bottles that day. I dont think your cups should be a problem.

They just don't offer plastic straws to you at the restaurants. I'm sure you could bring them in if you really wanted to. The paper straws they have now, do feel strange. I don't care for them. My children didn't even seem to notice.

The only thing (that I know of) that they will "hold at guest services" for you is a balloon. They aren't allowed in the AK park or at the AK Lodge. We had a balloon tied to the stroller. The helium was almost gone, so it was in no danger of floating away. I had forgotten about it not being allowed. The CM offered to store it for us, but we just trashed it.

If you try to bring in regular plastic straw they *may* ask you to toss them if security spots them when going thru your bag at security. We have brought in the disposable straw sippy cups (take 'n toss variety) w/out a problem, as well as regular sippy cups with straw in them. I think it's just the thin disposable ones they are worried about.

If you've ever been to an IKEA, they have paper straws in their cafe. I understand the ones they are using at AK are like that. I'm glad they are trying to provide an alternative for people!

hth!
