I've been reading about the straps and bars on the rides to lock you and the kiddos in for safety. My question is how long do you have to check that everything is locked as it should be and do the CMs double check this thoroughly? My DS meets all the height requirements, but he is sooo thin and scrawny that I worry about him being locked in and not jostled around too much. Aside from a small park, this will be his first experience with big rides.

I'm sure I sound paranoid, but I ask because at theme park years ago, my sister was not strapped properly and my mother caught it as they were going up the first hill on the roller coaster!!! She managed to lock it down tighter, but Mom got hurt(wrenched back) by leaning over just as the coaster went over the hill.

On many rides, you buckle yourself in to the available restraint and then "prove" it is done to the attendant by pulling up on the strap, etc. I would almost guarantee that there are sensors to indicate all belts are properly locked in an electronic fashion as well, before they let the ride go. I have never felt unsafe on a Disney ride and most of them don't require major restaint systems anyway, since they are more family friendly.
The crazier the ride, the more harness you get and the more thorough they are!

Presumably someone will be riding with your son as well. I always hold onto my son no matter what. He did move around on BTMRR and I think liked that I held onto him.

We've never rode space mountain though because the single line seating makes me uncomfortable that I can't hold onto him.

Most rides have a little yellow strap that you pull to make sure it's secure. I never felt unsafe on any of the rides and we did all the big ones (Expedition Everest, Rockin Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror, Big Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain), nor did I feel my scrawny just barely 50lbs soaking wet 7 year old was unsafe in any of them (48 inches tall)
